Transplanting sprouts? first time with questions/ideasUPDATE *PICS*

Hello I sucessufully started my grow with 8 seeds about a week ago and now I have 3 sprouts and they look just beautiful Now I had read that they should countine to grow like this with proper care for the next 3-6 weeks before transplanting. I was thinking about doing 2 transplants because I would like to grow some well established plants before flowering. So I was thinking after the significant amount of time to transplant into a pot that is about 2 gallons then continue to grow. Then transfer to a much larger pot like 8-9 gallon pot then grow and then shift to flowering stage after the plant is mature enough. Is 2 transfers a good idea? Or should I just go from the seedling to a large pot? Any input is much appricated!

Well there are a lot of variables here man. Are you growing indoors or outdoors? And if indoors, how much room do you have?

I start seeds in six packs using light warrior seed starter mix. Sometimes many seeds per cell. After two weeks I pot up to either ocean forest or my own compost. Usually this will be a quart container. Then a few weeks later into a one gallon container where the plant finishes. I'm looking for signs of the first roots showing under the container from the drain holes. It's time to transplant. I don't like to be in a container that is too large because the soil takes too long to dry out. The soil needs to dry out between watering to pull fresh air into the soil so that the roots can breathe. Not stay dry. Just get dry. I like to water at that just got dry point.

Stepping up when transplanting is always a good idea. So 2 transplants would be just fine man.

Remember folks these rules do not apply to autoflower strains. When the plant has such a limited life span you can't afford for the plant to take a week or more to bounce back from being transplanted. (if done right there is no bounce back time but we all know shit can happen ) So to get the best results from autos they should be planted in their permanent container right from the get go.

Nah, your answers were on the money, I just put it for people that might be growing them and think the rules transfer over.

Ya not an auto flower. But more light? Idk if I can haha the girls get 20 hours of light ever day with air circulation. I'm using a full spectrum 6500k light to simulate day light. Should the light be more than 20hrs? Thanks for the great info guys. This is my first grow and could use all the tips I can get.

I think he ment brighter light not longer. That's what they look like they need anyway.
Here is some that got bright enough light.

6500k is the color spectrum
The amount of watts is what you're looking for.
And not "equivalent to " watts.

You still haven't really given much info on what all is going on. I'm guessing that you're using CFL's.
How much are you wanting to get out of this? Are you just wanting a few grams? Is this just a trial run for expanding later?

Yeah sorry total newbie. CFL? And like I said first time growing. I'd like to hope for a couple of oz out of 4 plants. And I want to grow very healthy nice rooted plants with plenty of potting space for growing large plants. And contine to harvest.

Huh? CFL means compact florescent.
It's sounding like you've done little to no research into this man.

So my bulb is 27watt... To me it seems to be working. But what watt should be better?

Yeah, no. A couple books and articles is not enough at all. Sorry
CFLs are the small spiral bulbs that screw into a regular socket.
The long tubes are Flourecents
I tried going by books when I started as well, but I only got real answers once I started reading the main site here. Very brief, and if you have specific questions you can ask other growers. This shit is the shit yo.
Go to section after section. Start with lighting. It'll be a good read cause its packed with info, info that books either don't have, or take 20 pages to convene.

Yeah, 27 watts is nothing. What books have you read? If you have read anything decent, you would already know that amount of light wouldn't be adequate.

Hey, Hawk, not to diss the OP, but "reading" and "learning" aren't necessarily correlated. Maybe OP is trying to read and learn while stoned? I know, for me, this doesn't work.
Just read 10 pages ... "WTF did I just read????"

Well I have a fan keeping things cool. My guess is those 600watt bulbs get hot huh? Right now the room in the basement is at 80F and the range is from 72-85F. So if heat becomes a problem any recommendations on how to keep the room cool.

Well are you using an air cooled hood to help keep temps down? are you going to have an ac just in case your temps are getting too high? how much space are you growing in?
You should do some dry runs to before you start everything to make sure things all the parameters stay in check

Yeah I have a really nice AC portable machine. It can pump out air as cool as 50-60F but ya I wish I had this stuff set up prior to my seedlings but since that's not how it turned out I gotta get this stuff right. I have very limited seeds and don't wanna screw up my sprouts now that their here
Also I take some pictures of my set up so we can all be on the same page haha

Be careful I broke one bad!! I put black tape on it fixed it up. Killed it in the end Male

An air cooled hood is a *much* more efficient method of getting heat out of a tent than any sort of AC. (power-wise)
Good luck,

Probably. Don't put it too close for a while. Plants that aren't used to a lot of light can react badly to a lot of light all of a sudden

You can if it makes you feel better. When it gets past seedling stage you can rebury some of the stem and it will root.

Someone else will have to answer that. With my mix, I didn't have to add any supplemental for over 5 weeks of veg.

I don't know if this is true of cannabis but I've had plants that I have to bring indoors during winter and, if I put them right out in the direct sun it will burn them, not because of heat, but they can't handle the UV or light intensity. I think maybe it has to do with chlorophyll concentration declining like you losing a tan ....
But, I'd say 2 feet ought to be safe.
How long have they been seeing this HPS?

4 feet is perfect for those guys, Later on when they're bigger and stronger then they can take it closer.
What's the humidity like in there Is that soil as dry as it looks? The base of the stems look like their dying.

Always water from the top man. If you have adequate ventilation and fans and don't keep the soil soggy, you don't have to worry about it.

I think there is a use for tray watering. In fact, this is one of the hydroponic methods, called "wicking". Simplified, the soil media itself can act as the wick.
http://www.hannainst.com/hydroponics/hydroponic-wick-system.html
The usefulness comes about when you have allowed the media to get too dry and "channel" water. This leads to underwatering whereby the waterer thinks the vessel is fully watered because of visible runoff, but it isn't (and thus the "lift the pot" method of ascertaining complete watering). Allowing your pot to sit in water will allow it to soak up the water gradually and fill in those missing dry spots. The caveat here is you don't want your plant to sit in its runoff due to high EC (salts). There's a fellow on here or another forum that completely submerses his pots until they are saturated (naturally, he got accolades for this maverick method).
I've done this for years with house plants. And it works.

I am aware of passive wicking systems. And soaking your pots to water them is nothing new, or maverick. But it's also very unnecessary. Any intelligent grower will, A. not let their plants get that dry, and B. not judge by run off.
The amount I water is dependent on size of the container. A certain size of container should be getting a minimum amount of water per feeding to guarantee soil saturation.

Certainly not maverick if I'm aware of it. But what does that say of it's utility? I'm not recommending it as a regular watering method because it can cause salt buildup, especially if you don't empty the tray of remaining water. But it certainly can be a useful technique.
Quote:
But it's also very unnecessary.
More specifically, does that equate to "inferior"? Like I said above, it can be useful, no?
Quote:

Excuse me, but "not judge" what, exactly, by run off? Whether or not the plant is sufficiently watered? And, lets face it, many of the people posting here are newbies and mistakes like letting the medium get too dry are all too common, no? Shit happens. So, I think, it is beneficial to know of such remedies, right? Just like correcting nutrient problems ....

Whether it's watered sufficiently. Just like they were saying in the link you posted.
Unnecessary obviously does not equate to inferior. It just means that it's not necessary. In over 8 years of growing I have never had to use this method. Can people use it? Sure. I just don't see the point,

Just the point I made ... if your medium has over-dried, or is inferior in that regard (too clumpy).
Also, I've noticed that many people water the center of the bucket. I've found I get more complete wetting if I water from the edges first and make sure that shrinkage of the soil from the container sides gets "swelled" and moistened before watering down the middle. My buckets are also opaque so I can actually see the soil wetting down the sides.

Well you could go with either plain water or fert solution. He was just saying that's how he waters his plants. That doesn't imply that does or doesn't add ferts. It's just his way of watering. So if he wanted to add them he could with that method.

You have to assume that the run-off has poisonous by-products that need to be flushed away to benefit the plant.

I take em to the bathroom one by one, then flush with 4-5 gal ( depending how bad my back hurts by then lol). I try to do it gradually, but the last gal I just pour in untill it's about to overflow.
Also, I remove any yellow fan leafs at this point. Usually let them die off.

Hey everyone! i appreciate all the help. heres the latest on my little girls. they are 24 days old and recieveing 24hr light of HPS (600watt). at 85F with a humidifier and air circulation (fan) I think they look so beautiful as compared to the last update, they are all standing by themselves and really growing fast.
The last one has a slightly yellowing going on in a leaf. Thoughts?

My thought is that, at twenty-something days, those plants are very small and not very healthy looking.
My guess is not enough light (too far away) and too much water.

I know there small for 24 days but as previously stated they didn't have proper light for about 14 days. The light is 45" away from the light and its a HPS (600watt). I water top side with a spray bottle with filtered water about every day. But not very much just enough to get absorbed Because my substrate is almost rock hard everyday. The substrate consists of potting soil and verm. pH 7.3. Should I transplate soon to large pots with a better substrate? I was thinking coco coir and potting soil and verm. ? Are they old enough for add plant foods? I have a 10-15-10 and 20-20-20.

Woah. Do NOT water your plants every day. That does not promote healthy growth. You need to water them THOROUGHLY when you water, not just getting it moist on top. There is no way a plant that size should be needing to water every day.
The amount of light and distance from the plant is fine.
Did you pack the soil when you filled the containers.

I'd pop those out of the containers and have a look at the roots. My guess is they're not well developed from shallow watering. That, or they're root-bound to all get-out.
A good opportunity to replant in fresh medium!
If you're uncomfortable with the idea, just imagine putting your hand/fingers over the top of the pot, covering all the soil, with the little bugger nested right between two fingers. Pick it up, turn it over, and squeeze the pot just a little and the whole shebang should slide right out into your hand.
I'm sure you could find a Yoo-hoo tube video that shows it done.

No no no no no. There is absolutely NO way those are root bound. No way in hell. And those are too small to be transplanting. The most I would do to the soil would be to gently squeeze the sides to break up the soil just a bit. But I would not transplant so little.

Ok so your say that the roots need more room to expand. So loosen up the soil by breaking it up? Obviously not too close to the roots. And how should I being water to make sure the whole medium is receiving water?

Okay, wait for the soil to dry out. That should be at LEAST 3-5 days with the size of your plants. Then water it an ample amount. This is going to depend on the size of your soil containers. If it's a gallon, I would be watering at least a 1/3 to a 1/2 gallon. And then letting it dry out sufficiently again.

Yes, but they're over three weeks old. Personally, I'd like to know what's going on in there. You can't hurt 'em unless your daft. If you're careful, replanting isn't traumatic at all.
I'm probably way out here but, Hawk, I have a hard time imagining 4 feet a good distance for the light, especially when the thing looks so light starved. Then again I don't have lots of experience with HPS.

It's a 600 watt man. It's plenty close. And like you said, you don't have experience with this type of setup. I think that they've been over watered, not wanting for a lack a light.
And it's doesn't matter if they're over three weeks old. They AREN'T healthy and stable. Transplanting would not do a whole lot if they haven't even set out a decent root system, and by the looks of them, they haven't.

I'd still do it. But that's my intrepid, curious nature. Anyway, if you're willing to risk damaging delicate root hairs by cracking in paper towels and transplanting the sprout I can't imagine a careful inspection would hurt anything. I do this kind of thing all the time with garden plants.
If you dump that pot and it's root bound, you know what to do. If the soil falls away in your hand and show wispy root development, the worst that can happen is you gently put it back.
Whether or not it SHOULD be done or not is another matter ....

And for someone who doesn't know what they're doing, I would recommend waiting until it's healthier.

Well thx again for the info. Ill change up my watering cycle. I think ill wait on the transplant becuase I have work too damn hard to have these girls die on me just because of an early transplant. Ill be sure to keep you all informed with the progress. Thanks for all the input.

Uh, try and lower it a little bit. 6.8 is ideal for soil.

What's a good way to lower pH soil with the plants in there already? I want to use lemon juice to lower pH (organics) so can I just mix water and lemon juice and pour it over the plants, letting the excess drain out? If my ph is 7.5 should my water be 5.5 to bring the soil to ~6.5-6.8? Would this result in over watering?

Now that you've transplanted, can you tell us the condition of the soil/roots of the old pots?

I would just water with 6.5 and then ph your run off? That should tell you what your next step. IMOP

They've been growing a lot faster since the transplant. I watered last time with some 20-20-20 food, plus a little urine nitrogen boost, and adjusted the pH to 6.7 now how often should I be giving 20-20-20? the box says every 2 weeks... and ive heard that high Potassium is good for root development is that true? cuz ive got some "postash" which is food (0-0-60) should I be feeding with 20-20-20 alone during the veg growth period? or a higher NPK?
Thanks!

Well that was happening BEFORE you transplanted them, so it's obviously not from the transplant. Also you probably should've gone a little bigger on the bucket

Its a 3.5gallon. I do plan on doing another transplant to a very large pot. I just didn't want to go from a cup to like a 8-9gallon pot.

UPDATE! So I successfully transplanted my 3 girls into 9.5 gallon pots. each pot consists of 1 brick of coir, 2 cuft of potting soil and 2 gallons of vermiculite. they were transplanted on 4/25/13 and they had so much more room to grow that I had to start to tie them down and bend em so without further ado....
and to think that 2 months ago these babies were light starved, but they really pulled through, im so proud I cant wait til harvest!
