The coptics are a group that deviates from the popular Christian beliefs. Might be worth a look if someone likes the Nicean Bible but figures there is more to it.
Gnosticism is awesome, but TBS is right that there are a lot of paths within it. I almost never recommend gnosticism to people unless I know they have a personal learning background that is primed for it.

Yeah, the wide array of beliefs is why I didn't mention "gnosticism" specifically, because the beliefs can vary among different sects.
Interesting stuff, though.
I always thought it was funny that many christians don't realize that once upon a time their religion came in even more flavors than it does today. Some of them VERY different from what we know.
