Health and Wellbeing **Thread Sponsored by FarmerJoe!**
    #279734 - 09/13/09 07:53 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Its Sunday night, and I just got home from Mickey D's.  On my way there, I smoked a Marlboro 27; on the way home I ate my food and smoked another cig.  Once I got to my parking lot I had a third cigarette and came up to my apartment to type this:

I have got to get healthy again.  In 2006 I weighed 189 lbs. today that asshole scale says 254 and I'm only 5'9".
I'm going to keep a log here on the growery to keep myself accountable...we have a bunch of grow logs, but this is gonna be a shrinking log.  I'll update at least every week, more often if anything interesting happens, but if anybody wants to join in please FEEL FREE!

Here's the plan-
Quit smoking cold turkey (not my green tho)
Hit the gym 6 days a week for cardio and weights
Eat at least 5 times a day
No fast food. Period.

Tomorrow is day one.  Wish me luck!

I think I'll try it my way first, but if it doesn't work out I'll try yours, k?

If this were at Shroomery I'd put it under the health and wellbeing forums, but since we're still a little young for that degree of specialization I thought I'd drop it here.

I couldn't possibly do all that you're doing.  I don't smoke cigs.  I do eat a lot of fast food.  I don't do any real exercising.  I will try this next week to eat less at each sitting and will walk to work.  I will also go on 2 bicycle rides with some degree of vigor.  Soooo, no time like tomorrow!  I'm going to drink some choco milk, shower and get to bed.  Oh, im 5'10" and about 190.  Years ago I was into body building and lifted really hard 5 days a week.  Then I moved for school and stopped lifting all together.  I could lose 15-20 lbs though.

Cool.  You're at a lot better starting place than me!  I've gotta lose <gulp> 70 lbs.
Shit.  That's awful...let me break it down this way: By October 13 I want to go from 254 to 234.
There it is. My first goal. 20 pounds.

I'd just quit the fast food and any soda for now. Just by doing that you should feel 100% in a few weeks. Fuck the gym, take a walk every once in a while and just loose the weight slow. In 06' I was 210lbs, last year i was up to 280, now i'm down to 260 and slowly working it off.

I also wouldnt try quitting cigs at the same time of trying to loose weight, lol. I dont think things will go your way. If you drink alot of beer, that's a no no....  I think that's the biggest reason I gained so much over the past couple years.

I moved cross country this past week, and I just couldn't drive a thousand miles without cigarettes.
I had zero cigs today though...fiending like a mofo tonight, but should be better in the a.m.
In the morning I'm going to hike some of the mountains near my house.

cheers to health [Re: 81renaissance]
    #286649 - 09/26/09 11:42 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I can relate man. I have 85 pounds to lose and I'm half way there.

First things first is to quit smoking and change the eating habits. I went on a non-grease diet..no fried foods what so ever. Once your body gets used to it..greasy food doesn't taste the same to you anymore..and thus won't be appealing to you..(well it worked that way for me) Then i started pounding down the water...haha well not really. Just a 1/2 gallon of water a day..which really isn't too much at all...this speeds up your metabolism and also will rid your body of toxins(especially the toxins inhaled from cigs) much faster. I let my body adjust to this new routine before i hit the weights. For two months i stuck to this diet and lost 20 pounds without any exercise at all. I then hit the gym with full force. When i first started I went almost every day for 2 or 3 weeks. For me personally this was better because i got used to the routine and it made it more difficult for me to think of excuses not to go. After a few weeks i shortened it to just a 4 day workout routine. ex: chest and triceps on Monday...back and biceps on Tuesday...legs and lower back on wens.. just shoulders on Thurs..and  smoke mad cheeba and play some halo 3 on Friday haha. personally I take Friday Saturday and Sunday off..but that's because of my work schedule.
I hardly ever do any cardio..and i have gone from 286 pounds to 240.

I  hope in some way you can find something useful out of my rambling. It is working for me..so it should work for someone else out there.
Good luck man!

Hahaha, i have a sis in wichita.  I really don't like the town too much.  but then again, it's just a city i've visited maybe 40 times or so.  I have no friends there so i haven't done 'fun time' activities out that way.

Weak.  I started strong, but got off track when I moved to AZ a couple weeks ago.
I'm going out today to sign up at the gym close to my house...we'll call the OP a false start, and I'll keep it updated from here on out.

Quick update: Went and joined the LA Fitness over by my house.
They wanted $50 a month and a $150 joiner fee.
I sat there and bullshitted with the guy with shaved arms for a while and got him to go for $29 a month and $100 fee, so I joined up.
I'll check in next week!

Weigh-in Update:
Alright, I made it to the gym 4 times this week, ate like a champ (except for one night of tacos at Baja Fresh), and added a multivitamin and fish oil capsules to the dietary side of things.
If you recall, my starting weight was 254, my weight today?

248.

The first week is always very encouraging, and I know I won't continue to lose weight like that, but AWESOME start!

Trip: 2 things to start.  1) Make sure there is some protein everytime you eat.  Snacks, all meals, even if you grab a handful of doritos, have some milk or almonds,or something that has protein.
Protein is harder for your body to digest than carbs, so you actually BURN more calories daily if everytime you eat, you add a protein.
2) Weights. Cardio training burns calories during the workout, and for a couple hours after.  WEIGHT training with challenging weights burns calories for 48 hours after your workout.

Carbs before you workout. Preferably 3hrs before...so your body can utilize most of what you have eaten to feed your muscles while you stress the fuck out of your body.

Protein after a workout. Preferably 30 minutes after. Lifting weights tears muscle fibers..your body uses protein to rebuild it.

Ren is 100% correct about eating a well balanced carb/protein diet.  I plan my meals around when I am going to work out each day..so I know that in each set of every workout I am pushing myself as much as possible. But I still recommend some carbs 2-3 hours before a workout and protein after. ( on top of regular meals) trust me your body will thank you..and you will see greater more rapid results. (I am speaking from personal experience)

I just buy something called wheyabolic protein for a good supplement. For me it is a cheaper (And 100% natural..fuck the synthetic crap) alternative for the amount of protein my body requires to rebuild the torn muscle fibers.  The extra protein helps great with DOMS. (Delayed-Onset Muscle Soreness) which is when you experience the extra burning and soreness 24 to 48 (usually 48) hours after a strenuous workout. Wheyabolic is great for people who want to LOSE WEIGHT..which is the main reason why I take it. It's pretty much straight protein no other unwanted fats or sugars. It also helps you with overall strength and in developing tighter more lean muscles. Blend it up with some fruit and you've got yourself a tasty meal supplement!

Nice work ren.  Glad to see you're sticking to it!

Thanks FJ!
Good advice there as well.
Whey based proteins are great for post workout (and actually if you have  a shaker and can bring the protein mix to the gym, they've proven that people that drink protein DURING a strength training workout will actually burn more fat than those who just drink it afterward), but another thing you can do to keep your metabolism amped up overnight is to have casein protein shake before bed.
Casein is a slow release protein, and it will keep your body from entering a catabolic (muscle tissue consuming) state during your overnight fast.

Update time!

Alright, I kinda slacked off in terms of gym time this week...only went twice.
Still managed to eat a relatively healthy diet though, and finished the week at 246 lbs, for a total loss of 8 pounds so far!

I sat down and wrote out my work schedule, and then scheduled workouts around it so that I could refer to that and get in to the gym, I also need more vitamins, cuz I'm running low.

Oh believe me, I know.
I lost 60 lbs a few years back, and I've managed to regain all of it.

At 190 lbs I'll have a 12% body fat, so that's the big goal right now...another 2% after that, and I'll have a 6 pack, but let's not get ahead of ourselves

I'm one of those people who looks at a donut and gains weight. I maintain a weight of around 72kg though (158pounds) and I'm about 175cm (5 foot 8 inches).
My weight is mostly maintained by my diet, but I do go to the gym daily. But instead of pumping iron, I go swimming for 30 minutes. I think swimming is the most intense cardiovascular exercise you can do, and you will lose weight fast doing it. On top of that, you don't need a lot of time to have a solid workout. Not only that, but it does build muscles too. So if you guys aren't looking to "bulk" so much as to just slimming out and toning, I think swimming is the easiest, fastest and most effective exercise you can do. I honestly think there is no better exercise to lose weight. On top of that, it will always wipe you out.

Now, I'm a vegetarian which may put some of you off, but I honestly believe maintaining a vegetarian diet really does keep you slim, keeps you in fairly good bodily health and will eventually help you avoid junk foods When your body is no longer use to grease and fat from something like meat, tons of junk foods become unappealing to you. I hardly eat any junk food, not because I force myself not to,  it's just become unappealing to me.

When I became a vegetarian, I found it hard to stick to it because I really am not a huge fan of salads... However, there are things you can do to make anything tasty and appealing. Here is how I prepare my snack salad. I usually eat this at around midnight, after I get back from swimming and right before I go to bed. If you want to eat a bit healthier, but don't like salad but would like to eat it a bit more, try this out and see what you think.

So don't get scared by this picture haha. There are actually one too many tomatoes in that picture. I find this to be a very tasty and satisfying snack or even meal sometimes. Here's what you need: Lettuce (4 well sized leaves), a piece of bread, 2 cherry tomatoes, a quarter onion, pepper, your favoirte dressing (I recommend something italian with a "zesty" sort of taste) oregano and basel leaves.

So step one, stick the piece of bread into the toaster and cut up the lettuce. Cut it up into nice bite size pieces. I find that it's important to make things somewhat small when cooking - a piece too large and too flavorful, kills the taste of everything around it. Don't cut up the stem though, and avoid the pale pieces. I think the really green part of lettuce tastes the best. If you don't want to waste food, just eat the stems and pale bits as your preparing. It's easier to put stuff down when your focusing on something else.

Next step is to cut up the cherry tomato, heres where cutting small matters. Look how small I cut the pieces (I didn't do a very great job, but this is around the size you want.) I try and make them as small as possible. I don't like the taste of plain tomato, but I find it's very good if the flavor of tomato is well distributed. It's also just more pleasant to eat. I do the same with the onion, then I dice it up. For this salad I just used 2 small slices.

Ok so, now distribute the tomato and onion over the lettuce. Don't toss it, but spread it out over the surface of the salad. Now sprinkle some oregano over the whole surface, not a lot but enough. Sprinkle pepper on too. If your eating something you don't like the taste of - pepper, salt and other flavorings are your best friends.

Now, the bread should be done. Break up the bread by hand or cut it out into squares, and distribute it over the surface of the salad. Last but not least, throw in a handful of basel leaves. My favorite ingredient in all foods I make. Some of you may have noticed I usually have a basel plant sitting in my grow closet. Finish it off with a toping of italian dressing or a dressing of your choice.

Anyway, so there you have an extremely small, yet tasty and decently filling salad. I can't promise you that you will like it, but really this is a very healthy and decent salad to eat and you'll find the right taste for you by experimenting with the flavorings and different dressings.

I also do similar things with delicious pastas which if people are interested I could post as well.

I've cut back on the smoking, but I haven't quit, I think it really interferes with my ability to give 100% in my workouts (go figure).

This past week I did indeed SUCK, and I only maintained my weight.

Keep me honest Growery! I gotta do this.

UPDATE (finally!)

I slowed down over the Thanksgiving holiday, got off track with all the delicious food and wine and beer available for the week following also but I'm still committed and I have a couple of goals to drive me now:
1) I want to be the Incredible Hulk for Halloween next year, and I met a costume/props guy who said he would do the green body latex for my costume.  Needless to say, I need to be JACKED to pull that off.

2)I found a hang gliding school in my city, and I really want to get my glider pilot license but I weigh too much to get up on anything except a tandem glider right now.  Once I'm under 200 I can literally FLY!

Anyway, that's a ways off in the future, but that's where I have my sights set.

As of today, I weigh 242 lbs. (Still on the way down, but I need to pick up the pace!)

Well let me first start out by saying that is awsome that you are trying to change for the better. I can say that I quit smoking cold turkey almost a year ago. The way I did it was get an ounce or two depending on you tolerance. Instead of smoking a cig every time I craved one, I smoked a joint, then you got those people that say well right after I smoke I like to smoke a cig cuz it gets me higher or whatever the excuse is. Well heres a thought rather than smoking that cig smoke another joint or another bowl. After the fourth day it was a cake walk for me, and believe me it was the hardest thing I have ever done in my life, this just shows if you are determined enough it will happen. I am not going to say that this will work for you ren but its a point in the right direction of your health and wellbeing. Just to let you know I smoked for 10+ the hardest part of the wole thing was waking up drinking my coffee and not having a cig, but like I said now I can drink my coffee and smoke a good wake and bake bowl and I am fine. As far as the weight thing goes I have been 125 5" 9 since I was in the sixth grade so I have no advice except keep up the good work and I hope this helps you out a bit.

Squats are a major lift though!  I remember back in high school rockin' the 500 lb squat.  I can't even consider doin' that nowadays.

I'm on track still over here, and got some new running shoes as a Christmas present...they'll be here today:

Very interesting pair of running shoes you got there. I have never seen anything like it.

Could we get a product review once you get a chance to strap'em on?

They look like they could be very comfortable to run in. I need any excuse I can get to start joggin.

I've been running in these for the past 3 years.
You have to alter your running style a bit from what most people do: You land on the ball of your foot prior to your heelstrike; most people are used to a two part foot strike (heel-toe) but this is a three parter (ball-heel-ball) and its how your body was designed to run.
Also, traditional shoes are so supportive now, that the foot's stabilizer muscles atrophy, leading to a higher incidence of injury.  Barefoot running (or in these shoes) I  could literally see a muscle mass increase in my FEET.

The product is great, but you have to get the right size or you'll get blisters...moreso than in regular shoes.
I'll never run in anything else.

UPDATE:
Alright, I've been a bitch about this thread, but I want to give you guys an update that I now weigh 219 lbs!  I'm shedding weight like a fiend right now, and I've got a great weekly workout that is all body weight and explosive motion based, I'm feeling a million times better, and I haven't had a cigarette since Thanksgiving.

I'll post my workout sometime soon so you guys can see what I'm doing.

190 is the first goal, then I'm gonna focus on endurance as opposed to explosive movement.  I think doing endurance training will probably continue pushing me down into the realm of 180 lbs, but that puts me at about 10% body fat so I don't want to go much lower than that.

Nice to hear of the progress ren!

I very interested to see your routine. I am nearing the end of  my winter bulking phase, it's time to cut more fat and tone the muscle I have gained. Sounds like your routine can help with that.

I need to work on my mental health and physical health.  The former first though.  BUt they do sort of go hand in hand I suppose.

they def do go hand in hand. Personally I'd go with physical fittness before anything.

IME staying fit will help you cope with whatever is going on internally. It's worked that way for me at least. I guess it depends on a persons mental status..lol

Good luck with that man. I've been there. I used to play around with pharmies way too much in the past and it really fucked with my outlook on life.

Enjoy the stroll through the HOOD. I myselft will be hiking through the woods this afternoon. No hoods in my town. I know of maybe 2 black people that live in my town haha..and they are the whitest black people I know.

QFT.

It's amazing how good you feel after working out..

My favorite is when my last responsibility during the day is the gym then when I get home and vape the high is probably a gazillion times nicer. Especially knowing it's time to sit on my ass and be stoned and watch movies and/or play video games. Goddamn I do love wasting time.

P.S. My spell check recognizes the word gazillion, but not vape...

I absolutely agree. Once i finally sit down and have a good toke at the end of the day I truly enjoy it. I treat it like a reward for what I've accomplished throughout the day. This way I never take it for granted.

So Joe, this workout is pretty organic, but its extremely effective so far.
Keep in mind, I've also almost entirely eliminated meat from my diet with the exception of fish (which I love too much to give up).

Mondays
I do a 5 mile bike ride or a run with intervals of sprinting and just running alternately, then I do ascending sets of pushups (set of 5, set of 10, set of 15, set of 15, set of 10, set of 5) and repeat that with hands close together and set wide apart. In between pushup sets I do as many pullups as I can alternating forward and reverse grips.
Finally I do an abdominal series that targets upper, lower, and oblique abdominal muscle groups.

Tuesdays
Whatever cardio I did Monday (bike or run) I do the opposite. I also do a short leg workout with weighted lunges (I carry dumbbells), and calf raises.  I find that those 2 exercises give a very complete leg workout.

Wednesdays
Cardio (bike or run) is usually a little shorter b/c when I'm done I go to my back yard and do relays: Across the yard and back bear-walking, across the yard and back crab-walking, then I do six up and downs where I jump up on top of my 7 foot cement block fence and immediately jump back down.  I rest for 2 minutes and repeat that series 3 times (I'm working on doing more of these)

Thursdays
Just cardio: I try to run stairs or something in addition to my basic cardio workouts.

Fridays
Cardio (bike or run)
Then I use my dumbbells to work the minor muscles of my upper body (biceps, triceps, deltoids)

Saturdays
Cardio
Then explosive lower body training: Power cleans, box leaps, suicides

Sundays
Easy run followed by plyometrics: Airborn pushups, up/downs (an old football drill) and some form of sprint training like hills or soccer field drills (sprint the short side, run the long side for a set number of laps).

That's it.  No need for a gym.  I am gonna be ripped UP!

that is def a recipe for gettin ripped.

thanks for throwin it up there.

Stamina is an area where i am lacking so i may incorporate some of what you're doing into my routine.

I'm kinda at a loss as to what is best for me at the moment. I wanna get lean but still keep the bulked look i have now. Think i might break down and talk to the gay ass personal trainer at the gym.

thanks again for posting your routine.....finally

You can downgrade your weight training to a shredding workout with a greater number of reps with really low weight and more dynamic movements (cables, resistance bands, dumbbells, and no barbells at all).
Then work in the plyometrics and explosive movements, and you should see some crazy definition pop.

I plan on starting to use the state-of-the-art rec facility at my school.  It's so massive and awesome but I have rarely utilized it.

Got like two indoor tracks, 6 b-ball courts, 3 racketball courts, weight lifting thangs of course, and all sorts of other cool things.

Yeah I think that's the route I need to take.

Low weight high rep weight training and some more explosive cardio trainingis really what I need.  I'm gonna get on the ball with this. The goal is to be toned up and possibly ripped for my cousins wedding in 4 months. I got 20 lbs left to go until I've reached my target weight.  I just gotta man up and do it.

Hey everybody that's following along!

I recently changed my workout to a parkour preparation workout b/c its something I'd really like to do in the near future.
As I approach the "less than 200 lb" mark, I'm really pushing myself into more challenging physicality as opposed to relying heavily on my dietary habits to create a change.

You can see what parkour is all about here.

Pretty cool IMO.

Right now I range from 210-215 as it varies from day to day.

High sodium intake on any given day means that I retain extra water and weigh notably more the following day, but low sodium days result in a truer weight.

This new workout (they call it a warmup!!!) is very agility based, in addition to the explosive plyometric training I was doing, so its a great transition for me.
I'm still gunnin' for 180, so there's some distance yet to cover, but if you go to page one, you'll see I've come a long way.

Dude thats awesome. I need to drop about 50 lbs to be where I want. Any tips?
I mean I've been eating really healthy, cut soda out of my diet completely.

And have been walking 2 miles a day jogging for part of it.

I'm losing about 6 lbs a week currently.

So many.
First change your diet.  Forget physical activity for a couple or three weeks and just focus on how you eat.
Don't eat anything that somebody else processed for you (this means nothing that crinkles when you open it).  Consume 8-10 servings of fresh produce (a good mix of raw and cooked) including fruits and vegetables every day, don't eat any bread product where the first ingredient is anything but "whole wheat flour".  If it says "enriched" DON'T eat it, it has to be whole wheat 100%.  Eat lean proteins like turkey, chicken, fish (not fried), eggs, and almonds along with good fats like avocado, olive oil, and nuts.
The easiest way to do all this is to eat a crazy mixed salad with all kinds of ingredients and an oil based dressing EVERY day, and then fill in the rest of the day around your salad.

edit: six pounds a week is a lot and its really hard on your body after a couple of weeks.  Its usually a clue that you aren't feeding your body properly, and its becoming catabolic (burning muscle tissue for energy rather than burning fat).  Be careful that you are giving your body an AMPLE amount of good complex carbohydrate and unsaturated fats.

For the best results try to eat a MINIMUM of 5 small meals every day, making sure that there is SOME source of protein in every meal.

Other questions?

Sup ren.

How's the parkour treating you?  Still droppin the pounds are ya?

I myself have plateaued @ 205, but I fluctuate between 205 & 210 depending on my water intake. Started a new bulking phase last month and also started taking casein in the evening on top of my post workout protein supplement. It's been just over a month and I'm really getting some results strength wise...not really bulking up yet though.  Dunno if ur into supplements but bodybuilding.com has some crazy good deals. It's waaaaay cheaper than GNC.  I also take a pre workout supplement as well...jack3d....shits bomb.

  to health and well being!

The less reps, and more weight you put on the bar, the bigger your muscles will become.  Your muscles will be getting torn and your body will rapidly build back up.  If you keep up the high rep/lower weight, your body mass may not fluctuate back to such a dramatic lean body mass once you quit.  You have to continue to at least weight train on a weekly basis to maintain what muscle you did put on with any kind of scenario.

I cycle through bulking and cutting routines. What you quoted was when i was beginning a cutting routine. I cut for roughly 4 months. I toned up a decent amount....not as much as i should have...but the next go round should be better. I did lose some strength. It took me about 3 weeks to get back to where i was before (when i was bulking). Now I'm up 5 lbs on everything. Except my squats...still struggling in that area. Most of my recent gains have come as a result in my change in diet. I consume 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight. So i take roughly 200 grams of protein a day. Man oh man i didn't know what a difference it would make. waaay better pumps...torn muscle fibers are healing twice as fast. I'm able to weight train 6 days a week.
Life is good.

Looks like a bunch of people are getting on board here!

I personally am approaching the sub 200 pound mark very quickly!

I ride my bike almost everywhere I go now (anywhere from 6 to 35 miles a day!), and am still doing training with just my body weight and dynamic movements...

My pescatarian lifestyle also helps in that I eat very nutrient dense food that doesn't add a lot of saturated fat to my diet.

I'm feeling better than I have in a LONG time, and its only getting easier to maintain this lifestyle.

If you're thinking of starting a routine (anyone!) I highly recommend it...I was so apathetic until I started feeling really good.

Haha! I forgot this was here!
These past 4-5 months I've been pretty hard on my body and I've gone back above 200. I've been traveling for work, and its so difficult to maintain good eating and exercise habits in that situation.
I just started running again though, and I'm back to my regular eating habits so I'm seeing improvements already.
I'm still WAAAAAYYYY healthier than I was when I made the OP, and even now, friends that haven't seen me in a few months are amazed at the way I've changed.
Now that I'm active again, I'm gonna shoot for another 25 pounds and wind up around 180 for my short term goal.
I'll get back to updating this bitch regularly so you can follow along!
Thanks for the motivation!

It can be tough to fit in a healthy lifestyle while working, I can't even imagine traveling for work.

Good luck man!

Doc started me on some sustabolin 250 recently
It is not for you young boys because you dont need it yet :crankey:

I think i can feel the muscle mass growing in my sleep with this new teste addition, its a new designer hot mix im pretty shure because there isnt much info about it on the internet.

I do a very intensive workout with my job pretty much everyday but lately ive been doing kinda basic morning workout with my bench press, leg lifts i use big weight and then i try pumping out at least 3 sets of 20 presses with only 85lb on the bar. Yes i am old 55 so i dont need to tear my chest out every time i work out.:oldman:

When i come downstairs to my computer i try to pump out 3 sets of 20 curls each arm using 20lb weights.

If you have sissy bicepts you little internet faggs should keep a 10-15 lb barbell right where your pc is at.
you dont have to do it very often to get some definition.
Even the ugly girls will notice it:headbang:

The thing i dont like is i look so fat in clothes, I am 6` 239 right now.
Doc told me i need to slim down to 200 and the only way i can do it is with a major diet change.

I am thinking about going on a gluten free diet and not eating anything white for a few weeks..

Any help with losing weight as far as my diet is concerned is mucho appreciato.:inlove:

I was on a strict 1 mg twice a week testabolin 250 butt injection before this for about a year because of previous ball cancer, if i dont work out i feel like dog shit:dancer:

My fitness is crazy right now!
I ran a 5 mile mud/obstacle race last June after starting CrossFit in the town I lived in Pennsylvania.
Now that I'm back home for good, I'm looking for a CrossFit gym here as well...it is the best workout I've ever encountered and it will kick your ass every day, like it's your first day.

good to hear man. I wish i could mix my training up with something like that. the gym can get quite boring. After tearing the peroneal tendon in my ankle i am unable to run or jump for any extended period. My cardio training consist of an elliptical or a bike. it fucking sucks :kingcrankey:
