remove rockwool or not for clone transplant?
    #789636 - 08/14/15 09:20 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

first time cloning and i have some roots.  getting ready to transplant into solo cups but don't know if i need to remove the rockwool or just put it all in the cup?  i can't imagine leaving it all, but just wanted to check.

also, do i need to put holes in the bottom of the solo cup for drainage or just pay close attention to watering?

Never ever remove the rockwool. It is specifically designed to be transplanted with the cube. The whole point is to minimize transplant shock. The more you mess with the roots the greater the chance of stressing the plant.

And yes you need good drainage or youll encourage root rot, molds, and soil borne pathogens. Youll also get lazy plants that grow slow.  Just poke a few holes in the bottom.

Put a lil bit of soil or other media into the cup and gently push it down. Put the cube on top of your media making sure its level with the top of the cup or like 1/2 inch lower so water doesnt come out when you water. Sprinkler a bit of soil on top to cover  the cube and water it to settle the soil.

^ No need to remove rockwool, you can transplant into soil, soilless, or hydroponic medium.

You also want to cut holes into the bottom of the solo cup for drainage.

When you transplant, make an opening in your soil? where you will be moving the cube.  Be VERY gentle when handling your clone don't touch or break the roots.  Don't be the fool who presses hard down at the end smashing your roots.  Do it in low light not in full sun.  Then sprinkle in a little soil to fill the void after setting the clone into the hole.  Keep it moist not wet.  Drainage holes along the sides around the bottom along with a couple in the bottom are highly recommended.

Overwatering is perhaps the easiest most effective way of killing a plant.  Don't overwater.
