Rooted clones directly outside?
    #564302 - 06/14/11 06:03 AM (12 years, 9 months ago)

The title pretty much says it all.

Will clones survive if put outside directly in the ground into sunlight or will the sunlight still be too strong for them at this point despite rock wool cubes being filled with roots?

Thanks
Babs

they'll need to be weathered off. They'll literally get a sunburn IF taken from artificial lighting and placed in direct sunlight. Place them in a shaded area for a day.

I'd work them into the sunlight slowly.
Start by putting them outside for a hour the first day then put back under the cfl for the remainder of the day.  Then the next day two hours outside, then the next day three hours and so on until they're outside for the full day.
This has work best for me anyways.
Only takes about 16 days.

That MH and the sun would fry them. Until they actually produce healthy roots, it would be unwise to place them in environments where high transpiration rates will take place. Leave them under your fluoro for a while. When they start to produce new growth from the meristems, then you may start to acclimate them to stronger light conditions.

Start slowly in shade and work your way to the sun.

Pretty much this.

Might have misunderstood my post,  I mean they are fully rooted up in the rock wool and growing, I just generally transplant into solo cups, veg under the metal halide for a bit, then transplant the cups outside. Want to skip the middle step and put rock wool into the ground for convenience and security.

If you can, put them in a pot so you can move them from the shade into your desired spot over time. They're weak and will transpire more water than their roots take up if it's extremely hot like it is in my situation. If it's not very hot outside, you needn't worry as much, but if they're going to have lots of sun on them, they'll need their fair share of water.

That metal halide is hot, but the it's not as relentless as the Sun.

But essentially, yes you can skip the MH step so long as you allow them the proper moisture and don't stick them in full sunlight too quickly.
