Transplanting from seedling trays
    #555525 - 05/14/11 02:35 PM (12 years, 10 months ago)

Hello there ! ...

SWIM have a few questions about transplanting seedlings,
germinated in smallest peat-trays and seedling pots.

4 seeds were planted (Mandala#1) circa 8 days ago, last friday.
Germination rate at 100%.

Now the seedlings appeared 3-5 days ago, all healthy
and beautiful, as you can see on the pictures.

Do you think, that these pots are already too small for
the plants?
Guessing, that the root system is still very soft and weak,
SWIM fears to damage them, while a transplant.

Can SWIM give them a week or something in their trays, or
should he give them bigger pots asap to back up optimal growth?

Thanks for all your input !

I personally don't transplant until I see roots in the bottom from the drainage hole.

Those pots are fine for small plants. Leave them in there for a while. You will probably want to get them a little closer to the light source so they do not stretch any more. What light are you using?

SWIM grows them under full sun most of the day.
As a low budget project, there will be no loss in
wasting quality and/or optimal growth.
SWIM doesn't use artificial light for vegetation
and planning to transplant them outdoors, when
they are strong enough.

So you think, that these seedling pots are okay for the
initial stage?
SWIM is thinking about transplanting them to 8-9x8-9cm pots,
when they are ready to do so. So that the plants could
eventually sit in there, until final outdoor spot.

;-)

thanks

I know almost nothing about growing outdoors. My guess would be that they would be OK in those pots until it is time for them to go in the ground.

They will be fine I leave mine in small plastic cups for a few weeks. I let the root system get well established. Then transplant into ground. Be sure to dig up the ground real well and maybe mix in some perlite so it drains well

Oh yea in the small containers they need to be watered a couple time a day at the least outdoors.

SWIM wanted to transplant them into bigger pots anyways, asap.
Like you said before , they would be ready to do so, as soon as the roots show out of the drainage hole?

In his opinion, the plants should be strong enough to stand
the circumstances in the wild. Therefor the rootsystem needs
at least something as a 8-12x8-12cm pot for outdoorstarting.
SWIM got time enough, to postpone the transplant in wild ground,
letting the plants at first establish newer roots in bigger pots...

;-)
