young seedlings
    #244963 - 07/01/09 12:55 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

OK, so here's the deal. My young seedlings are not happy. I've got them under 250hid 20 on 4 off. temps from 70-85F. Humidity from 39-53%. I use a spray bottle to mist them and keep the soil moist. Probably three to four times per day. Also, i water them every few days when the soil is getting dried out. Still they are looking crispy. the cotyledons are yellowing already and these plants are only 5 days old. I've already lost one last week. I'm not sure what the problem is. I don't think i'm overwatering...maybe underwatering. it seems like the soil dries out very often. maybe they need a very small nutrient infusion?
please any advice would be helpful. Here are the pics: (the last is an older, more mature plant. should I nute it yet?)

Where did you get these seeds? From a bag you bought?

Yes. My friend is a caretaker for some MJ patients and one of his females produced the seeds.

What did the seeds look like? I've used some seeds that were "immature" and the plants looked similar...They were outdoors is the only difference.

How close is the light and how often are you watering? The soil looks pretty dry from what I can see.

Have you fertilized them at all? To much nitrogen to soon maybe.
And misting them that many times that young probably isn't good either.

the seeds were pretty light in color. I know that the darker the more mature. This may be it. i've some others from the same batch of seeds and they seem to be getting along better. . so, generally speaking, what happens when they are immature? thanks

yeah i thought that foliar feeding wasnt recommended in the early stages of plant development? clones and seedlings, need to have the water coming from the roots, this helps develop a healthy root structure. if the leaves get all the water and nutrients there is no need for the roots.

Dude check your soil ph also, your soil looks like it has woods chips in it, usually a characteristic of cheaper soil, which will make your soil more acidic.

What if you need to go the other way with your pH?

Need to test.

The higher the PH the more Basic the water is the lower the PH the more acidic. So if you are wanting to "lower" your PH levels then lemon juice is the way to go. Your soil does seem to be doing something bad though. Are you foliar feeding? If not there is no need to be spraying your babies leaves. All that will do is cause you problems and not do anything for your babies.

Your soil looks pretty clunky and should definitely be looked into.  Testing pH is where to start, though if your pH is truly around 7.5, that's not really a problem.  A transplant into a soil without so many large particles is also a good idea (try 75% good organic potting soil + 25% perlite).  As a first response measure, I would stick those seedlings into a greenhouse-like environment.  If at the extreme end of the temperature and humidity ranges you provided (85°F with 39% rH), that alone could be enough to dry out young seedlings that haven't established themselves, particularly those being housed in a poor growing medium.

You can build a makeshift greenhouse with anything from a large glass bowl and some plastic wrap, to a large plate, some chopsticks and tinfoil - or even just a large plastic bag!  Just get an enclosed space small enough to house all of your seedlings, place moist perlite on the bottom and drape some perforated plastic wrap over the top.  Mist the perlite and walls of the greenhouse as necessary in order to keep the rH between 65% and 85%.  Make sure to give it some fresh air exchange at least once or twice daily.

It shouldn't take long (5 - 10 days) for the seedlings to strengthen up and begin vegetative growth when doctored in a greenhouse environment.  On the lighting, you can continue to use an HID light source, but a simple fluorescent light during the seedling stage is certainly appropriate as these young plants will not use most of the light offered by the HPS until they get into their vegetative stage.  The fluoro can also be kept a little closer to the young plants and won't heat up the surrounding environment as quickly since you won't need as much light intensity.

Good luck and keep us posted.

no foliar feeding. I've stopped the spraying though. I guess I got a hold of some bad intel for that one. I'll add some lemon juice slowly . Does lime juice work?

Anything acidic will work but ya I think lime juice will work.
