I'm thinking about buying these lights. Yes or no?
    #602388 - 12/21/11 06:19 PM (12 years, 3 months ago)

Hi guys
I really need to get myself some vegging lights, as I would like to sprout and veg some new seeds so they are ready to go into my flowering tent as soon as my chemdogs finish. I plan or sprouting 15-30 seeds, aiming for 8-15 females.

What do you guys think of these lights. It holds 2 tubes and I can have 2x 6400k or  1x 6400k + 1x 3000k or 2x 3000k

I was thinking of getting the dual 6400k or the mixed set. Was looking at getting 2x units.
Will 2 of these be enough to veg 15-30 newly sprouted seedlings?
They are 2 ft long each, though I'm not sure what the wattage is.
Pasted below is a photo and a link.
After I hear some opinions I will decide wether I will buy these lights or not.

Cheers
Magickz

Oh, I just realized in the photo they are only 55w each.
Maybe I should get a couple 130w cfls instead.
I can't find any 200w cfls to be delivered in aus, if anyone knows of any it would be great if you could share it with me. Cheers.

If your looking for around 200 watts think about hps. Better light penetration = better buds.
And heat out put is about the same.

I would have to agree with kapt.  I have never used flouros for any thing but supplimental lighting.  But u can physically see the differences from hid to flouros or cfls.  But I am not sure how it works in aus.  Availibilty maybe an issue.  Just my opinion.

For that price you can get a hps MH switchable ballast light kit!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400-Watt-Digital-Ballast-Grow-Light-Kit-HPS-and-MH-Bulbs-Bat-Wing-Reflector-400w-/320814500711?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4ab208cb67

I bought 2 of these!  They work great!  If you watch there auctions you can get one for pretty cheap.  I paid 120.00 for 1 and 117.00 for the other

Yeah true. Well I don't think its worth spending the money for a magnetic ballast since I will only use it for MH. And I dont wanna get a big one to keep the power cost down.
Do you guys reckon I could get away with using just a 250 to veg these plants? It will only be for a month at most so they won't get very big.

What is wrong with flouros???

I use 3 Overdriven T8 shop lights for veg. My seedlings look better than almost any others I've seen on this (or any other site). They NEVER stretch, the space between nodes during the first two weeks is non-existent, they can be packed super close (touching) and stay cool enough to run right on the top of the seedlings. Here's some examples of awesome, NOT strecthed seedlings. The first pic the difference between a regular and Overdriven light.

I keep the lights REALLY CLOSE! The pic with me standing in the middle were vegged completely under the OD T8's.

Total cost for all 3 shop lights plus Overdriving: $65

I was using a 250w MH to vege with but due to the ambient temp in my place i had to switch to that 200w 6500k temp CFL, its working great so far. But if heat isn't an issue a 250 or 400w MH is the best way to go to keep moms and vedging plants.

though drgreenthumb is having great success with his T8's, you might try a setup like his. I don't have much experience with CFL's as of now...

For 80$ these work great
http://www.ebay.com/itm/4Ft-4-Tube-T5-Fluorescent-Grow-Light-System-Plant-Bulb-/230668144305?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b4e48eb1
EDIT: those are the 4 footers... the 2 footers are 80
Or I use 8 100watt equivalent CFLS with lil reflectors from Home de'pot.
total cost was like 45$ and they work Greeeatt as well

Look at the picture of the two shop lights. (enlarge it) Look at the ends of the light in between the bulb. That little box is the ballast for the light. The brighter one has one on each end. When you buy it, 1 ballast drives 2 bulbs. On an Overdriven light you basically buy 2 shop lights and put them together so that 1 ballast drives 1 bulb. Basically, each fluorescent bulb gets twice the power (wattage).

When I first introduced this idea at the Growery it was highly criticized. It was definitely NOT MY IDEA BUT ITS AWESOME! People said it was dangerous, I was gonna burn my place down, I would burn through my bulbs, Flouros are garbage. I heard it all.

Well, after 2 years of running 3 of them 24/7/365 I finally replaced the bulbs in them. Not because one burnt out, I just figured after 2 years of being run at twice the juice they might be getting weak. Couldn't tell from the seedlings though. The only thing I ended up burning was some good ass smoke. :potleaf:

Yeah but you don't want to give the pigs any more evidence than necessary. The Australian government does check Ebay accounts for tax purposes although this is for people who sell a lot of stuff on Ebay but it shows that they can check your account if they want to. It's also not ideal to have the transaction displayed on your statements. A prepaid credit card will help avoid that but it can still leave a record on your Paypal account that the prepaid credit card is used for.

They don't do this man.  Grow stores have WAY too much traffic going through them to make it worth if for police to wait at one and follow  you home.  Not to mention that they still have no basis for a search warrant from doing this.  Your buying legal equipment, this paranoia about the man watchin every move is make is just unwarranted.
