Spot Lights and Giant fluorecents.
    #351534 - 01/21/10 09:13 PM (6 years, 10 months ago)

Ok, question. If I want to add a little supplemental lighting to a little veg chamber, aren't those "Spot Grow" lights a waste of money?

I mean ya they are obviously heavy on the blue end of the spectrum, but a CFL that's (25watts) puts out far more lumen energy overall correct?

I used those spot lamps when I was young and just experimenting with getting the hang of VEG stage. These days I figured any cool white fluorescent is a better choice. Besides those fuckers get hot.

Another thing, with those pre-mounted long ass tubes, I wish they would sell giant ones. I also wish I could buy giant CFL at the hardware store. But I plan on getting a 100watt one from the grow shop some day soon.

As always THANK YOU for your time/advice.

That's ridiculous IMO. Why spend that extra money/energy?

I would never run a great big light for something so simple.
I'm talking about maintaining a small mother plant and little group of clones. I've never needed something big for that.

hid is much more efficient than fluors....so u save money on electricity. Ur talking about gettin a 100+ watt cfl...well instead...get a 70watt hps or mh...u will get better results than ur cfl and save money.

Well looked at that way, YES. I'd agree :yesnod:
But in my very broke situation I must proceed as cheaply as possible.

Your advice wasn't bad IMO, just impractical for a poor man.
After my first go around again, I could see doing that.
Though my shows are always so small I've never NEEDED to.

Still it would be nice to get small 90watt HPS and have a fat mother going year round. I'd love to give away as many as possible. But I'd only actually give them to two friends. It's too bad I can't be generous/open about it.

Weren't you the one who was talking about buying an LED system, those are expensive dude.  But now you don't have any money??  HID's cost WAY less than LED systems.

I already OWN a 600watt HPS system.
As for extra money... that's a long story.
Involving tax returns, GF's under the table job, and my shitty job.

Let's just say between the myco supplies I need, my bills, and the advice here and elsewhere, it will be a long time before I can get an LED system. (And before I'll consider it worth it-I'd like to get one of my tech friends to build a massive one if we can do it cheap enough.....but that's off my front burner for now)

I live in one of the most expensive places on earth.
And I HAD extra money....Now I'm pretty broke till the 5th.

I suppose I could skip rent and double up my light supply.
I could tell the landlord, don't worry, I'll have something to pay you with in a couple of months. Do you accept pot?

Wanna throw money in the toilet get those cfl's fucking garbage.

People think that they are cooler there not. People think that they are efficient and they are among the worst.

People make the stupid mistake of comparing like wattage's. A 200watt cfl is cooler then 200watts of HID light. That is the stupid mistake people make. You have to compare lumen output. Yes 200watts of cfl is cooler then 200watts of HID. Only thing is a 200watt HID light isn't the right bulb to compare to a 200watt cfl. A 75watt is equal to 200 watts of cfl light in lumen output. So if you added enough cfl lights to equal the light output of the HID the floros are gonna be way hotter cause of how many of them you need to get the same amount of light.
So if you wanted to replace HID lights with CFL's (I love when retards do this makes me laugh) you would need almost 4000watts of cfl lights to replace every 1000watt HID light to get the same amount of lumen's.
Cfl, T5, and all the rest of the floros fit nicely into one thing when it comes to growing and that is a garbage can.

But say I'm on a budget.
Why is it so bad to keep a mother alive using a couple of big CFL?

I simply can't afford the time/money invloved in doing both veg and flower in the same closet with the same light.

So while(from what I've seen. ONLINE, and OFF) I would say CFL aren't great for flowering, I really don't understand what would be wrong about keeping a few clones, or a small mother under one.

We're not all as rich/successful as Magesh. :smirk:

Well I'm not.

go to home depot and spend 15$ on this:

and the light mount in this setup:

it's worked great for me.  vegging only, of course.

Personally, I'd go with T8's as opposed to T12's. Go to WalMart and get a Lights of America 4' 2-bulb fixture for $10 and get a set of cool whites to go in it for about $10. Just the regular cool whites, no fancy grow bulbs. T8's put out much more light than T12's. FYI.

Yes,fluorescent lights work very well for clones and veg'ing.

See that pisses me off.
I've used these lights many times. I go in to Home Hardware, and the biggest thing I could walk out of there with was a 27W CFL, for the SAME PRICE ABOVE. I hate that shit. They should always stock the big ones. So called "legit" gardening is really popular here as well. I'd bring it up myself, but I'd rather not. I'm already buying Mason jars and other "odd purchases for such a young man"
Ok Grandma, just hand me my change I'll give a friendly thank you and we can both forget how high I was during this experience, and how long it seemed to take,  so we can both move on with our lives.
