well mushroom spores would need certain conditions to propagate, which would not be available in space, except on a space station.

I'd also like to add that just because we've observed all life we know about using water doesn't mean it's required.
Instead think of life needing something with the same properties of water.
Even then it's education to just try to understand but some ppl just take the easy way out. If they can't understand it they say its not real.
