 who grows in straight perlite?

mmm I'm looking into maybe a top fed drip grow with pure perlite as the medium or maybe something that utilizes perlites wick action... is it enough to keep some bushes fed though?
I've only got one grade which is fairly fine, it's indicated as medium grade. I loaded up my friends truck with some 110L bags just now because the local wholesaler changed their bags and decided they would just give this stuff away. Now to play with it.
thus far top fed perlite has my vote. going to try to keep everything nice and sterile using GH 3 part nutrients and DM zone.

perlite is a great medium in my opinion
it provides support, plenty of water/nutes for the plant
it has my vote over hydro any day..im not a hydro fan too much

Perlite doesn't provide nutrients. If your growing in straight perlite you need to add nutrients to you water otherwise they will die.

there's a reservoir in the hempy buckets that's 2inch deep (traditionally)
that's supposed to last 2-3 days as far as I know but I'm not sure.

Get some good expensive rope from a local boating place, I got mine from our old sail boat...It hold water very good, its very durable, its thick and firm...Hang that below in the bucket to get the nutes(have an airstone for oxygen) and run with it. Works alright - minor adjustments throughout.

Perlite is supposed to be a fairly good wick on it's own.
I think I'd rather use straight perlite if it gets the job done.
I'm leaning towards a drip system as all I'd need to do is fill my flood and drain table with perlite testing out a wick system would be nice for the outdoors I want to set up a greenhouse for my food eventually. I might try a wick system at school as I'm working at the greenhouse this semester.

yea perlite is like the best wick every...i was kind of talking about a wick system to feed soil
i have been thinking...now work with me here...
take pvc pipe about 1-1 1/2 cram it full of perlite...stick one end in the soil through the bottom of the bucket and stick one end wherever you need it to go...and since pvc pipe can be fitted with all those little pieces and shit the possibilities are endless.
i love wisk system becayse they are set and forget practically and are much more forgiving in my experience
any thoughts

Consider mixing the perlite with higromite too, that stuff is even better at wicking.

Isn't vermiculite supposed to provide a medium for some kind of beneficial fungus? I'm working on info I read on overgrow however many years back that was, so I might be dated a lil'

Well I don't know about that, but fungus and bacteria are in eveything so I would probably, yes
when I'm debating though I'm considering the benefits of increased water retention, and most importantly the cation exchange capacity

yea i think perlite/vermiculite is better than straight perlite for many reasons many of which i learned from the shroomery
people just choose perlite because it does do fine on its own so they don't have to worry about mixing shit and all that...we're potheads, we're lazy

I don't get it...
A perlite wick is useless for soil, perlite is used in hydroponics as a wick system as everything is just a big passive network of perlite wicking nutrients to plants.
Soil uses cloth wicks, I don't see how you could utilize perlite filled pvc in a soil grow as it would just add length to the wick of perlite that isn't utilized by the soil.

well in theory...you use like a good organic soil with a mix of verm and perlite for water retention just a little though...i actually use just perlite just enough to keep soil aerated and i only use a tab bit of perlite...
then since i have to setup my setup and leave it sometime for a day or two the wick system provides a constant supply of nutes and/or water
i feel like if you can provide a constant supply of things water air etc nutes etc you know those things the essentials then you are better off than doing the whole water and give it nutes and then waiting until its starving
just a theory needs adjustments im sure but i think it would work

one end in the water below and it keeps it perfectly watered you never have to worry about it all you have to do is check ph, feed those things

i think 'never have to worry about it at all' is a bit of a stretch. considering the idea is still just that. plus if your in a soil or soil-less medium that retains enough water for 2 or 3 days why add the complication of a wick system which you have to monitor, adjust and clean separately. Why would you ever not check on things for more then a day. Even if you leave town it seems like going unchecked for a few days is asking to ruin your grow. In an emergency there has to be at least one person you know well enough to trust with checking on it. Maybe I am just spoiled with good friends though.

Yeah, a person you can trust who doesn't smoke! I have one friend who I was a little worried about taking care of my plants, not that they would snitch, but that they would die. I came back from Burning Man and my plants were as green as before and still there and they looked so big because I was gone for a week.
I think the only grow you could really leave for a day is a soil grow, hydroponics needs to be checked everyday. With soil grows you can have a friend come over and water every 2 days and they will be fine.

why not just keep it always at a consistent moisture level? fuck having to water shit all the time.

I guess the only reason is root growth but we already covered that. I just don't see the extra 30 seconds it takes to water as a downside compared to maintaining an extra system, even if it is as simple as a wick in a bucket. As long as you have sufficient dirt or non-dirt it's only every few days you need to water. Hell my clones in the new dirt that I thought wasn't holding enough water are on day 5 and I wont water them today for sure.
But if your playing with it in school and want to test it out I am all ears for the results.

which one do you prefer? would you care to share a bit more on your methods? I'm thinking about getting away from handwatered perlite on my next round just for simplicity reasons.
Do you go with a bunch of smaller plants in 2qt or 1gal sized containers or do you use larger containers and larger plants?
Which one do you prefer? not just in terms of growth rate, but maintenance, quantity of nutrients used during the grow etc...

My buddy has used it on his last two grows @ approximately 50% coir / 20% perlite / 30% higromite. It looks similar to perlite but acts more like hydroton, only better. Perlite & coco have good water retention and GREAT drainage/aeration, while hygromite is kind of the opposite. There were some guys on icmag who did lasagna gardening grows with it too, i.e. layered 2" hygromite, 3" coir, 1" hygromite, 3" coir. The only reason I haven't tried it yet and most people haven't heard of it is the price IMO.

Do you go with a bunch of smaller plants in 2qt or 1gal sized containers or do you use larger containers and larger plants?
Which one do you prefer? not just in terms of growth rate, but maintenance, quantity of nutrients used during the grow etc...
Either medium works well.
If I could only use one I'd stick to the hydrotron with General Hydroponics 3 part (I'm currently using Floranova but I'd rather just use the 3-part) using KoolBloom liquid but I think I'm going to try using Koolbloom powder soon.
I've used Botanicare, Floranova, and CNS17 with coco and all worked well.. Botanicare are the most expensive and I'm skeptical about the cost efficiency of a lot of the nutrients from Botanicare and I think I'm going to try a 15ml Pure Blend Pro + 5ml Calmag which is basically the botanicare lucas formula. If you value organic you might want to try this.
On second thought I might keep just the coco if I had to pick because I plan to feed the spent coco to my worms.

less mixing means I don't have to over emphasize the importance of shaking vigorously to my garden gnomes.
Don't care that it costs like 3 times more than the floranova, I prefer it and get similar results.
I also tend to do my garden work right after going to the gym as thats when I'm not asleep and my lights are on so I don't have the strength to shake vigorously.

If you mhbound haven't come to the realization that a god damn pvc pipe filled with perlite isn't practical nor effective for hydrating soil, you're a fucking idiot.
If you want to wick feed soil for some reason just use a god damn cloth wick.
For the sake of redundancy and making you look like a moron, I'll explain. First off soil it's self doesn't wick water very good at all which is why the top of your soil gets dry rather fast. This goes for "soil-less" mediums too. PVC pipe can be filled with perlite and yes that can be lowered into a reservoir but at the end that enters soil will not be able to hydrate the soil all it would do is hydrate the surrounding soil which would be useless. One would then need to install a wick that layed out throughout the soil to get some useful hydration which would be pointless attaching to the perlite because you could just do this with cloth wicks through the soil right into a reservoir.
I think if one of my friends tried to design some sort of elaborate and useless setup such as your idiotic PVC perlite wick for soil I think I'd call Magash to punch him in the fucking head, because he'd be more idiotic than triptonic for putting seeds in a microwave which deserves a punch in the head.

My buddy has used it on his last two grows @ approximately 50% coir / 20% perlite / 30% higromite. It looks similar to perlite but acts more like hydroton, only better. Perlite & coco have good water retention and GREAT drainage/aeration, while hygromite is kind of the opposite. There were some guys on icmag who did lasagna gardening grows with it too, i.e. layered 2" hygromite, 3" coir, 1" hygromite, 3" coir. The only reason I haven't tried it yet and most people haven't heard of it is the price IMO.
Higromite is also a good source of silica. I was going to buy a bag myself, but the hydro shop said their supplier stopped carrying it.
