Are years-old bagseed still fertile?
    #193763 - 02/09/09 10:21 PM (7 years, 9 months ago)

I had a couple question for any bagseed cultivators here. First some context: About 2 years ago during the summer, I bought a bag of OK weed from a local dealer. It wasn't amazing sticky-icky dank weed, but it wasn't swag either. Anyway, the buds were covered in seeds and I kept some of them and put them into a air-tight film canister for the future. I believe I can grow some better crop than what I got in the bag if I gave Mary Jane the right love.

So my questions are: Does anyone here have any experience in sucessfully germinating a years-old bagseed to a plant? If I try to grow these 1-2 year-old bagseeds, would they germinate and produce a plant? How long do bagseeds stay fertile? What type of environment should seeds be stored in to prevent them from going sterile?

Thanks in advance.

Seeds to have a good chance of a grow are cultivated for that purpose. The seeds you find will likely not be good regardless of the age. Some will be obviously, but the odds are like 1 in 20 or something.

I had a Mason jar of seeds in a wine cellar that were 10-15 years old and still had over 50% germination rate.

If I were you I'd forget about the bagseed and mail-order some proper seeds. This way you know exactly what to expect, you can tell whoever you share your harvest with the name of the strain, and you can even get feminized seeds wich is a major hazzlebuster for small closet grows like mine.

To answer your question: Seeds should be stored in a dry cool place. Seedbanks store them in large de-moistureized fridges. However, if you have a lot of seeds from that bag and they don't look pale or green I would be surprised if none of them would germinate.

There's nothing wrong with running bagseed if it came from good quality weed and you're interested in learning how to grow.

Also you could find some elite phenotype and it would be all your making!

Fo sho. I just advise against it either way.

Spend 100 dollars on some seeds that you know are what you want it to be, and are going to do what you want it to do.

i don't agree!

spend a few grows with bagseeds and get to know the plant, the genetics are good enough unless you're used to smoking Amsterdam type bud all year long (most of us are far from that)
you can take any seed and grow it to produce VERY good bud, if you grow it right harvest on time and cure

once you've tried that and you're still not satisfied THEN by all means invest some money and buy your self something extraordinary...

seeds are made to last, it makes no difference if you start from really old seeds or fresh ones... so what if some of them don't germinate? what's wrong with trying them?

usually the quality of the high from the weed you got the seeds from is not really a measure of how good the bud will be, it probably took a long time to get to you and usually if it has seeds it means the grow was commercial with less then optimal conditions. so really the actual genetics can do anything, TRY IT!

It's definately worth while to spend 100$ on some seeds or 20euros on some Mandala genetics, or even 35$ for some Bubblegum from Sensi. Really there is no point in debating this.

If you want the sickest herb possible buy some seeds, use the breeders notes.

If you want to learn and have something of your "own" grow your bagseed.

Or do both.

I didn't wanna mail-order seeds because I was afraid my seeds would be seized by U.S. Customs, ending up with me going to jail! So you guys are saying that you mail-ordered seeds from seed banks in Canada or Amsterdam and your seeds were not seized by The Man?! That's awesome.

So to get seeds to your house you gotta mail-order them and not order them online?
