germinating seeds

Hello all I'm a first time poster and grower, or at least I'm attempting to be a first time grower. I've been reading about growing obsessively lately because right now is the time to plant outdoors, which is where I'll be growing. I was able to collect some seeds from a few friends. I have 7 seeds; 2 are of some high quality strain, and the other 5 are just seeds from decent midis. I wrapped them in a damp paper towel and hid them in my dresser. I checked on them in 3 days and only one seed sprouted a root. It's been over a week now and the rest of the seeds still have not done anything. Is it usual for seeds to take longer than a week to sprout or are they just duds? Thanks a lot for the help!

black gold seedling mix + put seeds in pre moistened soil + cover seeds with minimal soil + water with spray bottle + cover the future seedlings with some holey saran wrap so u have to water less
wait.
i got 100% germination and survival with my 16 seeds this way.

Thanks, I will try that. Can I still "reuse" the seeds I've been trying to germinate?

i suggest soil germination as well, but if youre going to do the paper towell, only get it damp, and lay it flat, with the seeds laid on it.
they dont need to be flooded
and the remaining seeds are probably duds, or theyve rotted, but you can always try putting them in soil. dont drench.

Almost every time I read threads bitching about seed germination times, the OP has failed to scarify and/or soak the seed for 18-24 hrs. Its a fairly important step in successful seed germination, and its simple.

I wasn't bitching, I was just asking a question. Please excuse my noobness.
After I did a little more research I found out about what you stated about soaking them in water after it was too late. Anyways, thanks for the help everyone.

I checked on them a few minutes ago because I was just gonna toss them after a generous friend offered me some good seeds for some free bud. Two of the better seeds had like half inch long roots so I'm gonna be putting them in the ground later I'm so stoked. I'll try the better method with these other seeds though.

I'm a little worried though about the first seed I had planted a few days ago. After we planted it we got a ton of rain that we weren't supposed to get. The area we are planting drains pretty well so I'm hoping it will pull through.

Anything that sprouts after two weeks tends to be a poor grower and producer IMO. Given that you haven't prepped the seeds for germination, thats probably not going to be the case. This make take a solid two weeks. I can't say for sure though. I always prep mine.
