    #119449 - 09/08/08 04:53 AM (8 years, 2 months ago)

i usually germinate in water just by leaving them in a cup of water over night however my heatings been playing up and when i woke up my room was freezing the water they were in was pretty cool ,,,, just wonder if this would have fucked up my seeds or will they still work now the temps back to normal???

should be fine

i germ all my seeds, even warm loving ones outside at about 50F/night just in moist soil, most of them sprout.

so a night in a cold room should be ok

To germ I wrap the seeds in a wet paper towel and put that into a sealed ziplock. Then set it on something slightly warm, like directly on top of a fridge or on a magazine on the t.v., just enough to fog the bag up.  Germs them real quick, usually all done in 1-3 days.

Your seeds are fine, cold water isn't going to hurt them just make them germ super slow.

I think it is pretty well documented that warmer temperatures encourage seed germination more than lower temperatures.

You've done controlled, comparison germination tests at varying temperatures?

I doubt very many people have taken different seeds from the same batch and tested germinating them at different temperatures to see how they respond. I really don't doubt the capability of seeds to germinate at low temperatures, but the idea that there would be no difference between a much lower temperature and a much more optimal one doesn't make a lot of sense.

the proof has been in the pudding my friend.

i used to do all kinds of whacky shit to germ, but it really didnt improve much for me.

What pudding? Have you germinated at different temperatures with seeds from the same batch? If you haven't, I don't really see what all the whacky shit has anything to do with what was being discussed.

theyre fuckin seeds man...

i dont need a control, i dont need a lab, and i dont need a notepad.

ive been sproutin seeds for years in all kinds of different ways and the results are usually about the same

im not tellin anyone dont do it "the best" way, im just sayin, its not really necessary.

hey have you heard anything about bed temp determining sex?

cuz i rarely get males, and wonder this bcuz of the same reason im arguing about the seeds

I didn't say you needed any of those things, but the statement that there could be no difference between the temperatures is obviously not true, considering that chemical reactions occur differently at different temperatures. I've never said that it wouldn't work, or that the difference would be that much, but I'm simply stating the obvious.

Easy kids, here are some facts:
Low temperature delays germination
High temperature disrupts germination
Optimum temperature (according to Cervantes) is 78F (25C).

Environmental factors do not influence sex until the seedling has three pairs of true leaves. After that, these factors tend to produce more females:
high nitrogen, low potassium, more blue light than red, lower temps, higher humidity and lower durations of light (14 hrs?) coupled with a lack of stress.

just me, it seems that genetics determine sex in the seed and sprouting phase, which you can't do much about.

well 3 days is what mine germ in. with or w/out bottom heat.

i dont know what else to say.

its like 3 days is my magic number.

anyway, yeah i didnt think temp in germ had anything to do with the sex of a plant. you might want to chime in over at the shoomery and back me up on that.

dont need missinformation now do we

Actually what has been proven by the seed companies is that it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:
1. a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
2. a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
3. a higher humidity will give more females.
4. a lower temperature will give more females.
5. more blue light will give more females.
6. Fewer hours of light will give more females. It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions.
