What option should I use to plant my germinated seeds?
    #420231 - 05/19/10 01:58 AM (6 years, 6 months ago)

I just received my seeds from highgrade (really good by the way) they gave me 15 for the price of 10. Now I have enough room to grow 15 plants so I want the best results possible.

I have:
1" grodan cubes
Fox Farm Ocean Forest Soil
Roots Organic Soil
Schlutz All Purpose Plant food (10-15-10) I realize this is terrible for weed but it was free so I took it.

I am wondering what would be the best method to plant the germinated seeds in?
I would like to use the rockwool cubes so I can maintain proper moisture levels easily but I am not sure if rockwool is nutritious enough and the only fert I have is the Schultz.

For the soil, I have a hard time telling when it needs watering and how much water to add so I am scared I will kill them with over or underwatering.

Here is my current hobby. I've mastered it and am looking for a new hobby

Use the wool if you want, seedlings need nothing more than water. Youll have time to come up with nutes.

Yah, for like a week.  Rockwool contains no nutes and if you don't stick your babies in a soil based medium, you will have to feed them sooner.

I prefer just throwing them in soil in keg cups for the first 2 weeks then I move up to 1 gallons.

It's easy to tell when they need water.  When you first transplant her into the cups or seed trays (work well for me too) you feel how heavy it is and you will know when they need water because they will be so light it feels nearly like the cup is empty.  Don't be scared it's not rocket science.

Damn dude nice flush on that cake!

If you're even half that good at growing weed you're going to put us all to shame!  My first advice, get rid of that shultz stuff and drop $30 on some nice nutrients. It'll really be worth your money

Agreed.

I didn't think it would make a difference but I never turned back once I upgraded.

i did seeds to paper towel then to soil. I think next time I will do right in soil. I cant see why paper towel could be better than straight soil.

Because with a paper towel, you can see which ones popped and which ones didn't. You aren't left guessing if its gonna come up out of the dirt or not

And am I seeing 2 plants in 1 cup? Pretty sure thats gonna cause problems.

Of course it's happening inside your head.
Why should that mean it isn't real?

It's not too hard to poke around the soil to see if the seed popped.

I'd put the seedlings straight into the ocean forest soil.

That's what I do and they love it.

When I start seeds I just put them in a cup of water and that works great.

RasJeph is exactly right when it comes to why straight to soil is not preferred. If the seed doesn't sprout than your out all the time spent planting it and the supplies used.

Hmm let's see, when it comes to watering soil, experience is the best. But you must practice to get more experience obviously.

Best way to know is by practicing is what I'm getting at.

My first experience was testing the weight of the pot.

That's one of the best indicators on when you need to water.

The color also. When the soils moist, its dark brown almost black looking.

It turns a dull brown when the top layer is dry.

I had another experience on my first ever plant.

When I came in my room it was all wilted and keeled over to the side. I freaked out and watered it.

I sat in the room for the next hour and watched it slowly correct itself by filling up with water.

May sound weird but it was a pretty amazing experience for me really.

Plus, the pot felt so light before I watered it which taught me the weight of the pot with no water.

Then there's the size of the plant.

Seedlings won't need watered that much until they can develop a root system to actually intake it fast.

Full established plants can almost be watered by a time schedule.

I water mine every 3rd day. I can make em last till the 4th day but the pots are really light and some plants might have a leaf or 2 wilted.

As long as when you water you have drainage, I don't think you will have to worry about over-watering.

I think it would actually be very hard to over-water a plant honestly.
