looking for a new sweetener
    #711642 - 02/05/14 07:39 AM (10 years, 1 month ago)

right now i use botanicare's pure blend pro grow/bloom, liquid karma, silica blast, calmag and fox farms beastie bloomz/cha ching. i was using botanicare's sweet raw up until i ran out. now i'm looking around similar products by other brands. specifically GH's floranectar and advanced nutrients bud candy.

i dont know anything about either of these products, hoping someone has some personal experience/knowledge about this stuff to convince me to buy one or the other. it looks like both floranectar and bud candy have more stuff in it than sweet. not sure if that makes it better but its nice to have more bases covered.

Well lets take a look at the labels....

Bud Candy

INGREDIENTS: Soluble Potash (K2O), Potassium Sulfate, 72 trace elements, Organic acids, Citric Acid, Ascorbic Acid, Polyphenolic Compounds, Esters, Raw Cane Juice, Sweet Brown Molasses

CARBOHYDRATES: Xyclose, Maltose, Glucose, Galactose, Aribinose

EXTRACTS: Cranberry Extract, Grape Extract, Malt Extract, Fermented Yeast Extract

VITAMINS: B-1, B-2, B-3, B-5, B-6, B-7, B-12

AMINO ACIDS: L-Alanine, L-Arganine, L-Asparagine, L-Aspartic Acid, L-Cysteine, L-Cystine, L-Glutamic Acid, L-Glutamine, L-Glycine, L-Histidine, L-Isoleucine, L-Leucine, L-Lysine, L-Methionine, L-Threonine, L-Phenylalanine, L-Proline, L-Serine, L-Tryosine, L-Tryptophan, L-Valine

Vs.

FloraNectar

0 - 0 - 1
GUARANTEED ANALYSIS
Soluble Potash (K2O)...................................1%
Magnesium (Mg)......................................0.5%
0.5% Water Soluble Magnesium (Mg)
Sulfur (S)..................................................0.5%
0.5% Combined Sulfur (S)
Derived from:
Magnesium sulfate, potassium sulfate.
ALSO CONTAINS NON-PLANT FOOD INGREDIENTS:
17.5% Cane Sugar
7.5% Malt Extract
5% Molasses

I would definetly go with bud candy over floranectar. In all honesty though...I'd stick with what you're using and supplement with molasses in between feedings if you feel your plants are lacking carbs.

A few times I've seen the opinion that the best tasting bud you can grow is organic bud, and also that bat guano is amazing for taste. I really don't know shit about sweeteners though. Molasses is probably a good organic option. I know it's sweet. I'm guessing it couldn't hurt to add some higher P bat guano and unsulphered molasses during flowering even with non organic grow.

hmm interesting. thanks farmer joe. i looked around but couldnt find the bud candy label with all that info.

any reason to stick with sweet? i think i might switch since bud candy has more good stuff in it. i think theyre about the same price too.

IMO I'd go with either bud candy, or carbo load both are AN products.

I've tried all brands that are listed.  And honestly they all seem to do their job well.  The AN products just stood out to me, because they are more consecrated than the others.  Giving oe more gallons per bottle.

Bud Candy is a blend of AN's sweet leaf AND carbo load.  :cookiemonster:

More so because of my personal oppinion. I feel it's important to run a company's full line a few grows before you start using additives from other lines.

well, im on my third grow using botanicare plus the fox farm additives

bud candy is looking pretty good to me now. i think quarts of sweet and bud candy are the same price at my grow store. might as well just try bud candy.

The organic thing has been debunked by our own Magash, by doing blind taste tests.

"Sweetners" don't do anything to actually sweeten the bud.  It's just adding base carbs for the plant to feed on and help it bulk up.

I kind of thought sweeteners were for stuff you eat like tomatoes. Well like I said, adding bat guano is supposed to make for the best smelling bud.

I'm not saying grow organic, just to add guano.

Again.  Adding nutrients does NOT make for better smelling bud.  That is up to genetics, and giving the plant exactly what they want/need.  And bat guano is a nutrient.

I'm not even convinced that the plant uses the carbohydrates from molasses. One of the primary byproducts from photosynthesis is glucose, but it's not exactly available for root uptake. If I had to guess, the benefit of molasses lies in the cultivation of a healthy soil microherd.

Well if we want to go by the results Jorge shows, adding raw sugars helps bulk up the plant.  I'm not sure if the methods they used will hold up to some scientific scrutiny, doubtful, but it is the theory behind it.

Nutrients are nutrients. There is nothing in them that makes smells and tastes stronger. Whether it comes from a Advanced Nutrients laboratory or from the ass of the rare Brigadoon super bat that lives in the mountains of Brazil and lays 1 nutrient rich pellet a month into a bed of diamonds while singing the National Anthem during the full moon.

Smell is in the genetics. The only way smell and taste are going to increase is to increase the number of trichomes.
