DWC/aero direct to 12: veg or bloom nutes?
    #691864 - 11/05/13 04:25 AM (10 years, 4 months ago)

i have 4 small clones in 2" netpots in a dwc/aero system. Ive started them right under 12/12 so my question is, should I still give them veg nutes for the first week(s) or go straight to bloom nutes ince they are under 12/12 from the start?

Bloom nutes of course.

See this. Ah, I see now you're working with clones.

I'd do veg for the first week then slowly transition.  In the future, I'd give me at least a week of root development before throwing em in 12/12

Sorry, what is the point of giving them veg under 12/12 for a week? It seems like an unnecessary complication.

Because they're not in full flower mode yet.  There's a transition period where they like having a little higher nitrogen.  Just like when you flower after after x amount of time in veg.

Personally, the day I cut back the lights is the day I switch to bloom ferts and I've heard Magash suggest this as well.

High amounts of nitrogen is known to cause issues during flowering I believe.

And a lot of growers transition during the stretch phase.

Sure high amounts of nitrogen can cause problems.  But I didn't tell him to do it all the way through flowering.  Just the first week dude.

I do kinda a 50/50 thing myself.

But the big question is what kind of nutes you running?

Ah yes he starts using bloom nutes, but not completely switching over tho.
Or at least not in the past.

This is my favorite nute program to this day.

That's fine. I figured, if the extra nit delay's flowering then why give his plants lot's of nit during the first week of flowering? If he's not switching from veg nutes to bloom nutes then what purpose does a transition serve, and is it really a transition?

There are a handful of guides out on the internet that talk about Stretch minimization in cannabis, and many mention reducing nitrogen during the initial weeks of flowering to reduce the stretch. They do recommend using a transition ratio of bloom and veg nutes to maintain a medium amount of nitrogen. rollitup 420mag

So I really don't think it makes sense to give them veg from the start and then transition. You might as well start with a 50/50 mix like stoney said, and then transition from that as that would probably be safer.

A.  He doesn't need to worry about stretch.  They're clones.  And they aren't flowering yet.  They are still rooting and vegging in the first couple of weeks of flower.

B.  I've found that reducing the nitrogen during the first couple weeks, has ever really made a noticeable difference in how much my plants stretch.  Genetics plays a bigger role.  And I've experimented thoroughly over the last 9 years of growing.
