Question about grow medium (beginner)
    #668436 - 04/30/13 12:36 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Hi,

It's my first time posting here, also my first time growing and I was hoping to get answers to a couple of questions please.

I want to grow in a pot (not hydroponics, sorry for not using better terminology) but I'm not sure what mixture to use. I've heard you can use a pete moss, perlite and vermiculite mix however I can't find pete moss anywhere close to me. Is there a easy to obtain substitute, or a better, cheaper mix altogether?

I went to the store and the selection of soils was very confusing, I'm hoping someone can give me some insight.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

However, I'm not from the US and we don't have that brand here. If I was to go back to the store tomorrow, what things should i be looking for? Would a typical seedling soil work? Or would a general "all-in-one" mix be better?

Also, if the soil I buy already has nutrients in it, do I need fertilizer at all or will I need it at a later stage?

Sorry for all the questions, hope you can help me tho

please & thankyou

A general all in one will work.

If it has nutrients in it you will still need to feed after a period of time. How much time depends on the soil but about 4 weeks of normal watering should be enough.

I hear it is hard to get in the mid west and east coast.

It is readily available on the west coast since its made in Ontario CA.

Just wanted to say a late thanks! picked up some soil for cheap and the plants seem to love it.

trying to do the cheapest windowledge grow possible... im skint right now so it's the best i can afford to do, not spent much more than £5 yet. Using seeds of unknown origin too, but I'm not bothered about the outcome, even if I get both males or unsmokeable bud or even no bud (can that even happen?) then its still a nice hobby and good experience for when i can get a proper setup.

here is some pics pic of my 2 plants just under 2 weeks old. as i said i've never grown before but they look pretty healthy to me. If anyone cares I can update here at a later date and let you know if i get anything from them.

"SUNSHINE #4"
This is what Sunshine#4 is made of..60%-70% peat and 30%-40% perlite. This is the combination you want and gives you excellent aeration which you ll need for  great big thick root development. And as 100s of university's studies have conclusively shown bigger the root system the bigger the yield. thats what we want RIGHT!! It also has a starter charge of fertilizer that gives it an NPK ratio of 6-5-11 meaning it has a ratio of 6% nitrogen(N)5% phosphorous(P) and 11% potassium(K). All you have to do then is just a bit more nitrogen to this mix and this would be a near perfect medium for growing your plants. Sunshine#4 also contains a wetting agent(surfactant) to ease the surface tension and allow for better initial water penetration to the growing medium
