I am planning on using a 48x24x60 grow room and would like to find a reflector and ballast that supports both HPS and MH for the respectable stages of growth. I have found a great deal on a 1000W setup, but am afraid that might be major overkill for that space. Here is the link www.thelashop.com/product.php?productid=1016
Its a good deal none the less, but would with the space i have a 400w be my best route...it will cost me even more in the long run
I do plan on venting with odor con troll BTW

HPS can see your plants all the way through every stage I believe. How many plants are you thinking of growing?
Can you post a picture of the room?

HPS can provide the proper spectrum for veg and flower, but it's nice to have a switchable ballast and run both types of bulbs. I'd say a 1000W is definitely overkill for that size cab, will be hard to keep cool. A 400W would be sufficient, a 600W would be fantastic (but will be warmer than a 400). I have a 600W switchable air-cooled HID over ~10 square feet, compared to your 8. It requires a pretty strong fan to keep cool.
One somewhat unrelated thought: think about your ceiling height before jumping into it. I built my cab out of wood and made the ceilings 5' high like yours will be, and I wish I had done them 6' instead: if you plan to use 3 or 4 gallon pots, the pots, light, and light support system will take up almost half of your growing space! Then, you've gotta make sure your plants are a least 8 inches away from the HID (with a 600W, anyway) so they don't get burnt. Anyway, point is, I'm down to around 2' of growing space for my plants, which can be handled with a ScrOG or other heavy training, but doesn't allow much room or error.
So, with all of that said, I'd recommend a 400W unless heat and height aren't going to be a concern--then go with a 600W. A 600 would be perfect for a SOG in this cab: you could probably fit over 60 plastic party cups in there!

Ok i got a prefabed gro space with the mylar http://www.thelashop.com/catalog/48x24x60-inch-Indoor-Outdoor-Garden-Hydroponics-Grow-Tent-Box-p-501.html ; here is hte lighting system http://www.thelashop.com/catalog/400-Watt-HPS-Grow-Light-Switchable-Ballast-Cool-Tube-Kit-p-1035.html ; its a 400w hps with a switchable ballast and glass. i bought a generic sun agro MH buld for 60 bucks also. I did go with the good fan though, the Can Fan 33 with the carbon filter. I will make my owh inport hepa filter with good old hillbilly engineering, duct tape, silicon, metal, and alot of fuck ya i can lol ...I can build anything, but i love the fact that this is tent is compactable in case i move and also pretty much plug and play, 100bucks too, 200 for the light system(250 with the other bulb i bough) and it has hangers and a cheap timer..
I do not have alot of room for a larger operation.. I plan to go with 4 plants and will train them using this guide http://www.growery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/239247/an/1/fpart/all
Lighting system
Im going to use good old mother nature enriched dirt for the soil, any recomendations on where to obtain some good dirt and nutrients for cheap?
now i need a good enviro contro, one with CO2 and of course temp control.. I have an endless supply of CO2 tanks through a fam buisness so ya ima gas them fuckers 
As to my babies size as well, i bought seeds that prefer to shrub out instead of reach for the stars

dude, in a space that small all you need is a 400w bulb and ballast, and regardless of what some say, you need a MH to vedge with HPS are the wrong light spectrum for vedging. While you can use a HPS(or any light) to vedge, using an hps will double the vedgeing time. I know from experance. What i'd recommend is a 400w Digital Lumatek ballast. It will run both 400w MH and HPS bulbs, aswell as 250w and 275w MH/HPS bulbs. I say get the 400w ballast and buy a 250w MH to vedge and a 400w HPS to flower with. Just make sure you have good air ventilation or your box will overheat even with a 250w! Ideal temp is about 25c but you can get away with as high as 30c.
