absolutely, and with good results.

Try looking under the cultivation forums and search for LED, you should find what you are looking for.

I'm not a fan

Sure, you can get decent results, but nowhere near the results of an HPS.

Agmotes did the best LED grow I've ever seen, but while his potency was great, his yield was terrible.

ya Ive got an old shower im gonna line with panda film. and use that for my flower room. Im just a cheap ass and hate buying lights.. trying to find something that wont break the bank. Im thinking about going with a 1000w HPS. just gotta think of a way to make a decent reflector. I refuse to pay 100 bucks on a piece of tin with a light socket. How big of an area are you using that 600w in harry?

shouldnt be too hard to make a decent reflector by yourself, let us know how you go. id be interested to hear about the process you go through in making it/ materials you use

my thoughts exactly...they will grow bud...but as far as im currently concerned...if you have the proper ventilation to get rid of the heat..go with HID....LED's are simply not worth the money at this point unless you are stuck with poorly ventilated or warm places.

see that's what I'm talking about. In my opinion people need to stop lying about LED's and giving their "equivalent wattage."

I just crack up when someone has a 15W LED panel and they say it's equivalent to a 400W HPS, because it's just fucking not. Now, that being said, 400W of LED will outproduce the shit out of 400W of HPS, but think about how many panels that would be, and at that point you're not even saving energy on heat either. 400W of LED's is going to be just as hot as an HPS if not more so.

How many watts was she running in those pictures? I can count 8 panels it looks like, I'm guessing at around 90W each? maybe even more?

So in that case, decent yield, but 1000W of LED's for that harvest? I'd rather go with HPS

Here is her statement to a comment just like that one lol word for word

While I certainly respect your opinion, I'll go ahead and share my personal experience. Regardless of how much HID I was running at any given time (2k, 3k, 4k), I encountered lots of problems with heat (like when your daughter trips over the A/C cord). At times the A/C unit's storage tank would fill while I was at work, and I'd come home to a 100 degree room with wilted plants. Other times I'd leave for a week and my friend would forget to monitor 1 aspect of the room (water, heat, etc...), and I'd come home to half the garden I left. There were probably about 5-7 total cycles in the course of 4 years where I had a solid harvest which endured little to no stress. Consistency isn't the easiest thing to achieve for a learning gardener, when you're facing heat all the time, and it can make a big impact on your total yield. On a really good harvest, I'd hit 1 gram per watt or relatively close with my HID's, but I think if you averaged out all of my harvests, it would probably be around .7 grams per watt.

My recent switch was from 4,000W HID to 1512W LED. The retail on my 4,000W setup (digital ballasts, vented hoods, hortilux bulbs), was about $2200. The ventilation system was another $200, and the A/C was an additional $500. So all in all I dropped $2900 for my HID's, and was running about 5500W for the entire system.

The retail on my 12, 126W units (1512W LED) is $4800 shipped; a difference of $1900. I don't run A/C (except intermittently during the summer), and the noisy ventilation system is history. Each of my 126W lights really draws about 144W, as they have 6 small fans on them. 144W x 12 = 1728W. So every hour I am using approximately 3800W less.

That 3800W equates to about $160 on my electricity bill every month in savings. $160 x 12 = $1920 savings per year! That alone covers the cost difference between the two lighting systems. On top of the electricity savings, there are no bulbs to replace! My Hortilux Super HPS and Blue MH bulbs cost about $700 per year. So within my first year of using LED, I will actually save $700 over a comparable HID setup with all the necessary add-ons.

LED's last for 50,000 hours before they lose 30% of their total output, and 15,000 hours before they lose 10%. At 15,000 hours, that's 4 solid years in your bloom room before your light is at 90% of it's original output! Realistically though, they will last 6+ years in veg, and 10+ years in bloom.

So to sum it up, I save $700 this year, $2600 next year, $2600 the year after, and $2600 the year after that, just for switching to LED. On top of it all, my yields are more consistent now, the heat stress issue is no longer an issue, and my yield is also higher quality. So in my opinion, LED can save gardens of any size, a lot of money.

those look like 120 to 300W panels...and I can see 10 in one picture...but even if its 90W a panel thats 900W for all 8 panels...and up to 3000W if its 300W a piece...

each LED light like that is about 1ftx2ft...so im guessing that 20sq.ft + the spaceing...which looks to be about that much or maybe a little more...so we will say 20sqft of lighting plus 40 sq.ft of spacing. That is 60sq.ft or about 7.75x7.75 grow area...

with 3000W of HID lighting you are looking at 100K lumens per 1000W HPS, for 300K lumens total...over 60sq.ft...thats about 5.6 sq.meters, for a total of 53.5 Klux...which would be ok for growing decent bud....

HPS's only put out about 10% usable light for the plant...so thats really only 5.4 Klux of usable light...

Lets say that LED's put out 75% usable light (its higher but just for conservative calcs let say it is 75%) Lets also say that these are 120W models...which put out about 4200 Lumens a piece. Thats 42K lumens of light and 31.5 K lumens of usable light...which over the same grow area produces 5.625 Klux of usable light intensity.

So yea i could see why she is getting such good results...with 300W units it would be even better...one must think though...that with 120W units...and 10 units...you are spending 4-5 thousand dollars on lighting alone...and thats the cheap end...

just my 2 cents...
peace,
agmotes165

Very Nice.  I am trying to figure out if I want to go LED or MH/HPS.  I will be using a grow tent 4x4x7.  What do you think?  WHat size LED for that area? any help would be appreciated by this beginner:)

What's the make and model of the LED's she uses 'ryder? Been considering making the switch but since the tech is so new it's hard to know which companies are reliable.

LEDgirl is heavily involved with the sale of LED units, correct?

Surely she could be 100% open about all of this.  But I'm just naturally skeptical of sales men/women, especially in such a gimmicky field as marijuana horticulture

Very interesting! I would have never considered using led, except for mothers, and clones. I would have thought it as being a big risk. I'm sure the prices will go down. LED has got a lot cheaper in all other applications. I like the low heat, and the low energy use advantage!

I was considering putting together a LED array of some sort for myself because of the awesome cool running and efficiency.

But then I started to do my research and more importantly, maths.

To buy the LEDs to sum up to a respectable lumen level, we're talking thousands upon thousands of LEDs. Despite running relatively cool and being supremely energy efficient in comparison to other types of globes, I realised that fuck it would cost a whole bunch on the initial set up and I'll be damned if I'm going to solder thousands of them together in rows upon rows come to think of it!

Think I'll shelf this project until I can find bulk super bright LEDs for just a few cents a piece. Nowadays they are upwards of a buck each. I just don't have that kind of cash on an experimental project.

Fuck that shit!

What were you planning on using? 1/10W diodes? In order to make it even slightly worth your time I would suggest nothing less than 1W diodes, but if you can track down some 5W'ers and still handle the heat output then you'll be rollin' fat

too much investment for shitty yields. loads of space usage and sometimes not even the right color spectrum. i'd stick with the 600w HPS.
the idea is nice but it is still too expensive and not the best results.
