blueberry in soil
    #506436 - 12/18/10 04:28 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Blueberry  This is the most picky lady I have ever worked with, any suggestions on medium or nutes to use for hydro?  Drip?  I will be trying drip with coco coir and blumats as suggested by Ruffuz.
Peace
Mush

Yeah, don't use the FFOF at all and build your own soil.

Blueberry is very touchy when growing in coco if using General Hydroponic nutrients I recommended 6ml of each grow micro bloom or 6micro and 9 bloom. She's very sensitive to nutrients.

I find it interesting you recommend cal/mag without knowing anything about his water quality or if he's using filtered or tap.

Depending on what nutrients you use and your tap water, cal/mag might be a good choice. If you're using FFOF I'd just use tap water and add some extra dolomite lime instead of spending money on cal/mag.

Are you growing in coco or ffof? Or are they unrelated questions?

Blueberry is a bit of a prick to grow, do you have experience with coco? If not I would not go with straight coco your first time... possibly cut the ffof with 40% coco 10% perlite. Still get some of the benefits of coco and less of the headaches. When mixing soil and coco, you ph it as you would soil not coco. Personally ph of 6.2 as I am under the impression the ph raises a bit as it sets and gives a larger window of absorption for nutes.

In general blueberry likes to be topped for best yield, and nutes depend more so on grow medium than strain. If you go with coco, you either need to use cal-mag supplement with your main nutrient program or get a coco specific line of products such as canna or cns17.

As far as ratio for just ffof... 75% ffof, 15% perlite, 10% vermiculite.

bla bla bla etc. etc...

thank you for the soil suggestion, I am growing in soil, and trying straight coco for the first time, I'm going to be using a low dose of flora nova bloom with the coco.  So yes 2 separate questions, but I have been curious about mixing in soil or perlite to the coco, seeing as how picky a strain the Blueberry is.  Who out there has experience with the Blueb?? what are the best mediums and nutes for this strain??  So far the clones are rooting well straight into the coco.  Also, does anyone here have experience with using the blumat drippers??  I'm going to be using 3 gallon grow bags......where do you place the dripper next to the base of the plant or out toward the rim of the bag??  Does the water actually saturate the whole bag even though its only dripping on one side??  Any and all input is welcome.  Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So I check my cuttings, and the blueberry rooted perfectly directly into the coco.  They rooted in only 7 days, and I transplanted the cutting/root ball/coco into a slightly larger pot.  In one of the pots I put a mix of 50 % potting soil 50% coco and about 15% or so perlite. The other 3 I put straight coco in. The potting soil is neutral pH so I will water them the same with 6mL of Flora Nova plus 1 tsp Ca/Mg +.  We will see which one the blueberry cutting prefers, the straight coco or the one with soil/coco/perlite.  I will keep you updated with the results.
The roots are VERY thick and healthy looking already for being only at day 10 after cuttin them.  In fact, they are so healthy I think I will always use straight coco now to take cuttings for the blueberry.
The White Widow, however did NOT root that well straight in the coco, preferring the spongy peat/rubber starter plugs over the coco.
