So in your time growing have you come to favor the small containers you have pictured a lot? Do you feel "sea of green" in a soil medium as worth it as opposed to larger plants/pots or growing s.o.g. in a hydro setup?
Don't really favor any method really I'm always switching back and fourth when I get tired of doing one or the other.
Do you favor sativa or indica in a s.o.g. setup?
Neither, I like a cross of both. Pure Indica stays smaller and doesn't stretch enough and the pure Sativa stretches to much. These are a cross of both strains.  I bred this strain myself just for SOG growing.
It has been my experience that using one gallon containers leads to root cramping and stunted plant growth. Achieving much more than half an ounce per plant has been really quite difficult. It seems that in a hydro setup the cramping isn't as big of an issue and yield would be much higher.
With the strain I used when using 2 gallon bags I had space not being used by the plants. I found no diffference in yield using the 1 gallon bags in the limited amount of time they were in them. The plants I use require no veg time and are flowered the day they are ready to plant.
Is it perhaps more of a strain issue, some being more sensitive to root cramping than others?
Possibly, to be honest I never ran into the problem with any strain I used in SOG. These are Lifesaver from BOG 
I've always been pretty good at getting a lot out of a small space 
Remember a half oz a plant isn't easy to pull off that's 4 plants per sq ft under a 1000 watt that is two pounds. Not many pull it off.
What would you say is an average yield grown this way in your experience?
Don't know. My average is between 1 & 2 Lbs per 1000 watt light or for each 4x4 foot space.
Currently I'm using 2 gallon pots in hydro for large plants. Same yield less plants.
When doing soiless grows I like the Sunshine mix #4. Myself I hate coco coir for growing. (Yeah I know it works good it's just a me thing)

I hated Chronic myself. I got huge yields from it but nothing I would call Chronic. 
I expected more from Serious Seeds.
