    #234123 - 05/30/09 12:52 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

my friend has spider mites and I know spider gnats are the best thing to get to get rid of mites rite?

he said he will buy them if I can find a place online that sells them cause he says he can not find one.

Does anyone know were to buy these things?

well you could get lady bugs too, they'd work just as well if not better I'd think

they will probably work, but I'm wondering why you don't investigate this yourself instead of just waiting for an answer. How many lady bugs did he put around the plants?? 5, 10, 20? or did he actually get a bag that has like 150+++ in it? I was assuming a lot of the bugs would fly away so you'd need quite a few if he has an infestation that is destroying entire plants....

also, can you provide any pictures??? and where are these plants?

he used 1500 lady bugs bought from some local grow shop.

there dieing off for some reason but there are lots of mites still tons in fact. they keep chopping down over infested plants and have been trying to wash them but its no good.

the plants are in a room built in his garage with a veg room seperated by a real built wall with a door and a bud room.

they have the plants in cycles so that they crop about 5-10 plants every 2 weeks.

there not that good of growers but there doing alright. they use an inferior soil and i tell them to get fox farm but they wont listen to me on that.

they have the full complete foxfarm nutes kit.

this grow is in the pnw.

its really not my grow its a friends and he owes me some money so i want him to succeed lol.

We used to use a spray of soapy water(dish soap and water) to get rid of spider mites.

lady bugs tend to be better at controlling aphids, their natural food source.

spider mites can be controlled by predator mites, which can also be bought online.  some sites sell large quantities for mucho $$$, but these are for whole greenhouses and nurseries.  search around and you can find suppliers offering smaller amounts for $30-40.  they come in a little spice shaker filled with sawdust-like material.  you shake this out on and around your plants and wait a couple weeks for the population to build up and take out those nasty pests.

Tobacco water or tobacco dust juice is a traditional organic insecticide used in domestic gardening. In The English Physician Enlarged of 1681, Nicholas Culpeper recommends tobacco juice to kill lice on children's heads, referencing it as an insecticide poison. Farmers have been using nicotine sulfate insecticide since the early 1800s.

Tobacco water is produced by boiling strong tobacco in water, or by steeping the tobacco in water for a longer period. When cool, the mixture can be applied with a spray, or 'painted' on to the leaves of garden plants, where it will prove deadly to insects.

Tobacco dust juice has a similar use but is produced by mixing water with tobacco dust and black pepper.

Basque angulero fishermen kill immature eels (elvers) in an infusion of tobacco leaves before parboiling them in salty water for transportation to market as angulas, a seasonal delicacy.[2]
