Can someone start me off with the basics? I see a lot of different terms and types of ways to grow.
I'm not sure if I want to do it inside or outside but I still need to know the fundamentals, the topics around here are way too advanced for me.

Secure genetics. How many plants? Decide on medium. Get ph meter or paper. Lots of cheap quality nutes on the net. Get proper light 600w. Build a room or get a tent. Get fans and scrubber if need be.
Learn as u grow. If u have never grown a plant expect issues. Don't worry about fancy additives as can be confusing. Just stick to ur Veg and bloom. Little molasses and go from there.
Try not to cut corners if u can unless u know why and what your doing.
It's a weed it will grow. Sooner u get trying faster Ull learn. Reading is great but no replacevent for experience.
If wanna be cheap, outdoors in sun and natural soil is almost fool proof once established.

I'm uploading the info on growing that I have to drop box, should be ready to download 3 hours from when this post is made. The very first book I read at 19 was Greg Green The Cannabis Grow Bible. It really helped me to understand all the basics of growing pot. it's not my favorite book, I have a physical copy of Marijuana Horticulture The IndoorOutdoor Medical Growers Bible and all the chapters are color coded to help navigate the book when you want to look something up. There are also videos in here if you are not in the reading mood.

Heres some random advice for your grow.. Hydro will grow faster, this will also give you a bigger plant with the same set time as a soil grow. But hydro is more high maintanence. You do have to wath out for algae though, but a good way to prevent this is to have low temp res water and someyhing like sm-90. A soil grow can also have problems such as pests, so you have to really watch out for that. As far as lighting goes , generally you are going to get a gram per watt, so the more wattage the more bud. Also consider growing techniques because they can really affect the yield! I really reccomend supercropping as well as topping. If you are growing a lot of plants, i would do SOG with a wired screen.
You said you are considering outdoor or indoor. With outdoor, lots of things can go wrong, i really would not reccomend that unless you had a greenhouse.. One last thing that i ran into with my grow i just harvested. Make sure you get a dehumidifer for your tent!!! Especially if its a closet grow next to a bathroom. My big ass top bud was infected with cobweb because of the humidity...FML

Lol generally a g a watt.. first timer ur lucky to get half or so of that. Guys who are super dialed in can squeeze out bit more then that... anyway realize ur point was more watt = more plant...

I've just started too and I just bought a CFL with about 4000 lumens output and 3 autoflower Northern Lights seeds.
I may get some rooting blocks or just soil grow to start out.
I'll invest in a larger light for flowering and growtent with a extractor + carbon scrubber
or
Transplant the plants outside.
This is the easiest and cheapest way that I could figure out to get started so it may help you too.

Ok heres the basic breakdown of MJ growing choices:
Indoor or Outdoor?
Autoflower or Traditional plants?
Soil or Hydroponic?
Name-brand seeds or bagseed?
Store-bought nutrients or DIY nutrients?
For a beginner, i suggest indoor with CFL or LED with soil and store bought nutrients. U could pick an autoflower (flowers automatically) or get a traditional plant (u manually put it into flower mode). Autoflower is simplest but are for smaller yields.
I recommend buying a name brand seed. I dont recommend bagseed as it could be shitty genetics in that bagseed. Bagseed BTW is a seed taken from a bag of weed u bought.
Theres a huge range of money u can spend on this hobby, from a hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. It depends on how big u wanna go and the quality u want out of your plants.
But i would argue u can get decent quality bud for a couple hundred dollars or less.
