Grow Tents, Exhausts, CFL's, etc.. Beginner Q's
    #765560 - 01/14/15 08:27 PM (1 year, 10 months ago)

Updated Question [and thanks to everyone again for the help!]

I'm having issues with the exhaust system. I read I need a ~200cfm exhaust fan for size of the tent, so I found 240cfm, but the only carbon filters I can find are 440cfm (they come with a fan as part of the combo's), and from my understanding the exhaust fan has to have greater/equal to CFM of carbon filter. Is having too 'high' of a CFM bad if the space doesn't require it? Would a speed controller for the exhaust fan fix this [Speed Controller] Am I overthinking this?

Hello Growery,

It's my first post. Hurrah.

I've been reading all day and I think I've figured out mostly what I'm trying to accomplish, ordered seeds from a vendor and everything.

The problem I'm having is lighting. I've done a few hours of research and am getting nowhere.

I only plan on having one plant for personal use. The 'tek' I'm sort of following recommends using CFL's.

I'm running into one main problem with this [I'm gonna number the Q's for my own sake]:

1) How do I hang the CFL's horizontally over the plants? Is this even necessary? Originally the plan was just to 'dangle' the cords over a horizontal pole I have in my back room but I don't think having 4 lights just 'hanging' over the plant is necessarily a good idea, maybe I'm wrong. I want something that I can plug the lights into, and raise/lower it with a pulley system as the plant grows, but I'm coming up short in my 'research'.

This made me think that maybe I should use a grow tent, which lends to more questions I couldn't really find an answer to.

2) How important is light leakage? Would just having the plant in a bathroom sized room be a 'waste' of light, thus necessitating a grow tent?

3) Do grow tents REQUIRE air circulation like exhausts/intakes? Would I kill my one plant if I just had the 4x CFL's and the plant in the tent with no circulation? I assume the answer is YES but I don't want to spend X amount of dollars extra if I don't have to (I'd be using either LED/CFL's, still trying to figure that out). I was thinking of using something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-GL60LED-Spectrum-Growing/dp/B00FGFW0XO/ref=pd_sim_lg_3?ie=UTF8&refRID=0CH3353GKZK95M3K889H
and was curious if air circulation would be required.

4) The reason I want a grow tent (in this case) is that I might just use a LED grow light instead, since I've noticed many more 'options' as far as a hanging system that would be easier to 'move' with the growth of the plant. This could just be my beginner ignorance speaking as well.

Any help is great,

thanks.

If you want a light that can easily be adjusted but without buying a high priced LED, you could go for a T5. You can get a 4 bulb, 6 bulb or 8 bulb fixture. At 52 watts, 5,000 lumens each, you could have a 208 watt-416 watt, 20,000-40,000 light. Well, these lights aren't the best for flowering, but, they can be used. For veg, you're going to want the 6500k bulbs, more blue and white for veg. For flower, use 2700k red spectrum. This light will set you back $100-$200.

I'd either build a cabinet or use a grow tent. Here's the thing, the grow tent is already made so that's a plus. That part is relatively arbitrary. Yes, you're going to need air circulation in whatever space you need.

You can use a passive intake and just use one fan for exhaust, or you can use one fan for the intake, one for the exhaust. This is directly related to cabinets but the idea is more or less the same in a tent.

You're going to need something for the smell as well. It doesn't sound like you want a very large grow though, so I'd just go with one fan for exhaust and a small carbon filter. Look at inline or centrifugal fans. You're not going to need larger than a 6 inch fan and filter.

Or if you want to use a very small space and stick with the CFLs, here are a few threads.

Paying a lot more just for ease of hanging isn't a good idea. You'll need to save as much money as possible.

Thanks for the reply. The links were very helpful. How much is there to controlling the airflow? Do I need to have some kind of duct speed controller, or have them on timers?

For the most part I doubt I'll ever have more then one plant, it's for two medical patients who only smoke at night.

I assume the purpose (of ventilation) then is just to 'refresh' the air rather than 'condition' the air?

With one (or two) plants at no more than say 4 foot tall, is the smell going to be pretty bad? I was gonna skimp on the carbon filter since the tent will be in the backroom but I don't want guests getting blasted in the face by the smell.

Have you heard/had any negatives with LED's other than the initial cost?

You can get a 400/600w aircooled HPS/MH and fan for 200.00 give or take much more powerful then t5's.

I'm just wondering if HPS is 'too much' for me, plus I'm worried about electricity bill if using more than ~300 watts.

Also, as far as using CFL's/T5's, is an exhaust system even necessary in a tent? I've been doing some reading that said otherwise, but I'll probably implement it regardless.

PS Jello Biafra is my hero.

get your self a good 150- 250 watt grow light set up that can use hps and mh bulbs. cause that will give u alot better penetration and alot better yield then what a cfl would ever get you. and a 150 watt hps/mh set up will do alot better then a 200 watts of cfls and alot less heat.

IMO a 400 watter is perfect for a tent. It isn't all that much running a 400w lamp 18 hrs a day.

Here is a simple formula that can tell you how much you will spend.

You will need to find out how much you pay per kilowatt hour

kilowatt hour x wattage x hrs of operation

Lets say your electric company charges you 8 cents/kilowatt hour. 8 x .400 = 3.2c/hr, so if it's on for 18 hours a day during veg. thats 57.6c per day, or apx $17.25 a month to the bill.

Exactly

Remember when comparing light systems do not compare like wattages. You can't compare say the heat from 200 watts of cfl light and 200 watts of HPS or MH light. Simply cause in order for you to get the same amount of light from a cfl as the MH and the HPS you would need 1200 watts of cfl light. Everybody thinks CFL lights are cooler cause they don't know how to compare them.

and it makes me wanna bang my fucking head on the table every time I see some fucking retard post how CFL lights are cooler.

Well I was about to go ahead and get T5's but it seems that would be stupid having read all that. I'll go with the HPS .

While we're on the topic, is the 2700/6400K thing the same with HPS (i need 2 dif bulbs?), or is it 'one HPS to rule them all?'. I know with the CFL's everywhere said you need one for veg one for flowering. I'm sure my ignorance is really showing right now.

Try and find a lamp with a switchable ballast then you can use both MH and HPS bulbs.

Know any good examples?

I found this: http://www.amazon.com/Apollo-Horticulture-GLK400GW19-Digital-Dimmable/dp/B004YXDHX6/ref=sr_1_1?s=lawn-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1421295623&sr=1-1&keywords=MH+HPS+kit+150w

I'm figuring I could tone down the electricity use by using the dimmer. Electricity is -expensive- here.

I know Apollo horticulture sells 400w lamp set ups with switchable ballast ranging in 400,600,1000 watts.
Aircooled hood is the best option imo.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/browse.html?ie=UTF8&marketplaceID=ATVPDKIKX0DER&me=A2WRS4X4C0GMOQ

http://stores.ebay.com/lowballer/

Using the dimmer isn't advised (heard its bad for the bulb and you lose potential growth) but it does cut back power usage.

Thanks. I found the air-cooled one after my initial post too, I'll probably grab that.

Is the basic idea to use MH for veg and HPS for flowering?

Think I found my last question:

I want this tent: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00H9N29SC/ref=gno_cart_title_1?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2WRS4X4C0GMOQ

I'm gonna hook up a 6" exhaust fan.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KMTYFK/ref=gno_cart_title_0?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=A2WRS4X4C0GMOQ

Are those 3 passive intakes on the tent enough for me, or should I add some kind of forced air intake down at the bottom? Is it usually advised to put a regular table-top fan at the bottom of the tent as well?

Thanks everyone.

Can't answer your tent question about the tent but I can tell you that ventech fans are loud as fuck. IMO Hydrofarm makes a quieter fan.
