if a child asks you if god is real, what do you say?

i have no children but was wondering about this. do you just tell them what you believe? tell them about the major beliefs and let them decide? tell them to go read a book? say hes real like you would santa clause?

It will honestly depend on the age of the kid and how the question was asked.

There's no easy answer for a questions like that.

For me it was easy. My kids were aware of the topic of santa claus before god. We had the chance to explain to them the elaborate lies that other children were subjected to for the sake of tradition and their parents' entertainment. When they asked about god we shared our personal beliefs (my wife and I have very different ideas). We both told them what we thought and we told them how everyone else has different beliefs, all just as important to them.

Then we told them to decide for themselves, but take their time and be willing to change as they learn. Anyone trying to rush them or scare them to any conclusions is just trying to manipulate them for their own purposes.

That sucks man. I was in similar boat. My parents kept lying after I told them I figured it out. They kept insisting. I can't say for absolute certain that it why I started questioning them about the Roman Catholic faith, but my questions about church/god came pretty shortly afterwards,

I'd tell them the truth, that no one knows.
I'd then move on to explain how there are many beliefs and that there is many because of different opinions. Lastly i'd encourage them to develop an opinion on the matter by them selves.

Which IMO is that it doesn't matter, there more than likely isn't a god, but live a good life, and if there is a god who is deserving of your presence he should accept you, and if he doesn't accept you just because you didn't worship him then he doesn't deserve your company anyway.

No way we're celebratiung christmas or any other made up ridiculous christian holiday in my house though...

I tell them "some people think so, but not me".

People aren't born into religion, they have it taught to them. Nobody is born believing in crazy religious traditions. If you force feed a child that from birth, its more or less brainwashing them into following your beliefs.

I tell the kid "I feel like it is unfair to give god credit for everything. it sells the universe short" and let them figure shit out on their own.

Kids ask questions because they don't know the answer. So it would be impossible to 'crush the kid' by clearing up an important, legitimate question. No one has any evidence for any of the gods in any book/bible. There's more evidence for the existence of unicorns than there is for that of "god". So don't assume that you're gonna 'crush a kid' by answering questions in an honest fashion.

Yea he wasn't implying that "god" is fake.

"God" is a belief, most religions rely on a common concept of faith, or the belief in something despite the lack of conclusive evidence supporting that belief. Belief in "god" is a subjective thing, it is something you either think or do not think exists (assuming One cares enough to make a decision on the matter). The belief in "god" is just as legitimate as the disbelief of "god", as long as you don't attach all of the unnecessary canonical bull that comes with all of the man-made "god-books" that claim to know the true meaning and intent of "god".

A key point I think most people are trying to make is that belief in "god" is a decision made by the individual. An individual is first presented with all relevant information and then makes a decision based on the information supplied. This information may include the concept of faith, it doesn't (and shouldn't) be limited to hard scientific evidence (that biases the decision too much and doesn't paint a complete picture. To imply to a child that "god" exists in a very concrete way, without mentioning the lack of evidence, the vast differences in opinion on the matter, and the extreme violence that has happened in the past in the name of "god" would essentially be the same thing as telling a small child that people who have different color skin are evil demons and should be hated. Since they are not given the full story behind the differences in opinion on this matter, the lack of scientific evidence to back up that claim, or the historical background of human suffering in the name of racism....a seemingly retarded statement like "people of different color skin are evil" suddenly becomes fact in the mind of a child (and can result in some really fucked up ideological action later on in life).

This kind of one-sided brain washing of youth has led to countless acts of violence, and One should draw upon the mistakes of history and realize that faith will not die out simply by presenting children with the whole picture, but it will allow them to make their own choices and decide for themselves. This usually results in a better understanding of the bigger picture, and a strong faith (or lack thereof) that does not require violence and forced unanimity to convince One that their decision is the right decision. It would be much easier for people with opposing opinions to at least partially see where the other side is coming from, and would be better equipped to solve problems in a civil, non-violent manner.

But then again, these are all like, my opinions...man :thedude:

I would just tell him yes, but i would never go past just saying yes. Like trying to force it on him, id just kinda ignore religion till he got older.

When he got older, I would say that in my opinion, there is a higher power, but there is no christian "god". But then tell him he should decide for himself.

I used to believe in god, but then I lost my faith. IDK why, but whatever
