Im a complete n00b at this but that's common sense man. The bulb can only pull what the ballast can give.

Dude! Take that bulb out and go get yourself a 600w bulb! You're gonna burn down your house, or at least burn out the bulb...

You are supposed to match up bulb and ballast. You need to get a 600 watt. I doubt it will catch fire, but the ballast is not designed to fire a 1000 watt bulb. I'm not 100% sure that it's hurting your ballast, but it is possible that it is.

I get the impression that mixing different wattages = an improper burning arc tube or whatever its called, and you probably won't be getting the intended spectrum of the bulb. I wouldn't do it.

Be careful, always get the right bulb for the ballast you have. Otherwise you could have some bigger problems on your hands. Like hawk said, make a trip. Even if you have to drive 50 miles, at 50mph your there in an hour.... Think of some other things you might need while your there ex:- PH equipment, perhaps you need more ph up or ph down, maybe some new soil or some perlite, you name it. Either way that is how long it takes me to get to mine, about 45 minutes to an hour. Cheers...

I would HIGHLY recommend that, see now you are prepared for the trip, know what you need to get. Boom bang bing. PH is very important, and having the right tools will give you more than satisfactory results. PH Is so important to nutrient uptake it is ridiculous, small fluctuations can result in deficiencies/burn or other problems including lockout. Cheers my brother, 200 miles it is. Get everything you need
