Using Warming cables in containters?
    #691063 - 10/29/13 08:52 PM (10 years, 5 months ago)

Anyone use warming cables outdoors in a cold frame greenhouse before? I was at first going to heat the whole GH with a heater with a built in thermostat but I forgot it is on concrete so it may not work as well as if it was on grass/dirt.

You could make a grey water heating system that runs through the concrete and heats the concrete from the inside out. While the sun is beaming in through the top, this may be all the heat required, as long as your greenhouse is a good one.

I wish you many blessing in your endeavors good sir.

Water's been storing heat for many years. My Russian physics instructor said that in Russia you'd have to put a barrel of water next to your barrel of potatoes to keep them from freezing in the winter.

They also suggest lining the back of your greenhouse with water barrels for winter gardening. Water takes a lot of energy to transfer heat to and from, so it will hold the temperature in an area stable.

I saw a really awesome DIY tek for a solar water heater made out of popcans, plexiglass, 2x4's and aluminum tubing. It was pretty dope. Make a frame out of 2x4's to fit your lines of popcans stacked on top of each other (the one I saw was something like 6 rows of 10 cans), cut the inside of the tops and bottoms out of the cans, seal all the seams so they're a single piece, and pipe them together with a pump and an insulated rez. Paint the cans black to absorb heat, slap the plexiglass lid on to protect everything, and there ya go! He said it worked very well as his hot water tank heating his garage.

I took a similar approach to deal with heat actually. It worked well.
