400w Coated Metal Halide. Thats not the bulb I plan on running, I just used it for the layout.
Later this afternoon I'm going to rig up a ballast and see if I can get it to light.

Look what I get to install this weekend. 
I've been burning it in the last two days and today I pulled it apart for inspection. There were no problems with the wiring.
Total cost using scrap and used materials $0.However, I will need to source a piece of glass. Maybe I can take apart my old aquarium and cut a piece to fit?

Well made!
That's an expensive ballast you posted, mine was $30-40. Anything special about it?
Can't you place the ballast outside the room? Where it's dry and heat doesn't matter.

The purpose of the "can" is to pull heat away from the ballast in on order to increase its lifespan and to hide the wiring. I installed a long lead to the light so I could keep the ballast away from my grow area.
Your absolutely correct in that there are cheaper and more elegant solutions to building your own equipment. In fact if I were to add the cost of all the materials used in this build it would have been cheaper to just purchase the equipment off the shelf. This was also my first attempt at building an indoor application and I wanted insure I didn't burn my house down.
