Do you know what designed means?  Whether or not we can maintain a plant based diet today that is not how we evolved, not how we are designed.  We are omnivores, that is a fact you can't dispute.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10918988

I'm sure I can pull up more but something tells me it would be wasted, no?

My premise was that design and function are related, and pointed out there is no lack of function in what I am arguing for.
Lets have a look at the definition:

Quote:

1de·sign verb \di-ˈzīn\
Definition of DESIGN
transitive verb
1: to create, fashion, execute, or construct according to plan : devise, contrive
2
a : to conceive and plan out in the mind he designed the perfect crime
b : to have as a purpose : intend <she designed to excel in her studies
c : to devise for a specific function or end: a book designed primarily as a college textbook
3
archaic : to indicate with a distinctive mark,

Never once did I say we are not omnivores, and capable of consuming flesh, it is pretty obvious we can, and that done right it can be healthful. The original statement was that we are not designed to be vegetarians, not that we are designed to be omnivores, but that is clearly more than possible as well. Without design how can there be function?

People are still saying you need meat, yet I provided a link to a study conducted for 20 years by someone with (this is getting old), impeccible credentials, that proves otherwise...

The long and the short of it, it can be healthy to eat meat, it can be healthy to be a vegetarian, you do not need to be one or the other.

Over and out, for good this time I hope.

Well of course design and function are related but just because one is capable of doing something doesn't mean that was it's intended purpose.  It's intended DESIGN. Tools can be multifaceted but the fact remains that a tool usually has a single intended purpose. Which is where this argument stems. No where did I say you need meat.  But the study you linked to suggested it is less healthy to do so, which is plain false and clearly a conflict of interest.

In fact in a 1999 meta study, which combined the data of 5 separate studies from western countries, it reported that fish eaters have a lower mortality rate than that of vegetarians, with occasional meat eaters tied with vegetarians.  Vegans and regular meat eaters have the highest mortality rates.

http://www.ajcn.org/cgi/content/full/70/3/516S

The fact still remains it's only the world we live in today that can maintain a vegetarian diet.

I don't like to get in the whole vegetarian debate... but I am just gonna put this out there. This is not a solid argument, it's just interesting.

That's not an argument anyways.  Just philosophy.  Besides he's talking about sustaining human population in the future, to which I would agree unless we find a way to produce meat without the need for pasture and feed.

Einstein was a better physicist imo than a philosopher, but to each his own I guess.

Okay so we should not eat plants or anything that was living for that matter.  You should try that diet.

Not to bring the argument back up again, as my points have nothing to do with diet, but I hear this kinda shit all the time, and its absurdity requires challenging:
Quote:

drawde said:

By saying "this is getting old," you imply that people in this thread would agree with you despite everything else, if only they could realize that someone with real authority agrees with you.  This is a HUGE logical fallacy called "appeal to authority."  It's used way too commonly, usually by those who believe something, but don't understand it well enough to argue themselves.

Just because someone with credentials that you respect believes what you want to be true doesn't mean that it is true.  It may be more likely to be true, because the expert is (hopefully) very well informed, but the only judge of truth is evidence, regardless of the source.

I dont want any particular thing to be true, only to seek out the truth. You are making an assumption about my character which you have no basis for (which I think is equally absurd), have I even said I believe in vegetarianism?

In regards to the credentials, they serve only to reinforce the evidence which is there, in a large quantity, in the source I listed.

Excuse my presumption, that was more intended as a sort of "general 'you'," meant for all those who use these types of arguments.  I just kinda jumped on your throat because you were available while I was annoyed.

I understand that the credentials are there to strengthen your points.  I was mainly trying comment on the fact that your argument, and many others like it, seems to depend on the recognition that this dude is "better qualified" to make these judgments than us laypeople.  Aside from being a major fallacy, it makes even good discussions degrade to "he said, she said" bickering.  Better to present evidence as it is, without all the gilt.
