List of Available Micron Sizes for Bags-- Ice Water Extraction, Bubble Hash
    #489978 - 10/20/10 10:42 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

All of the following micron sizes for 5-gallon water hash bags are available online as of June 2011.

I divide the bag sizes into categories:

THE WORK BAGS

230μ

220μ --This is the common size for the workbag, but Dropbags, among others, makes a 230μ and some larger sizes, up to 400u (suited for different plant material, just saying).

209μ

200μ

190μ

185μ

180μ

170μ

COOKING HASH BAGS
(The following size bags are generally considered only good for cooking, adulterant for good hash for sale, or mixed with 25μ and given away to friends.)

160μ

150μ

135μ --I haven't seen this size used, but I would think that depending on strain/sativa dominance this could fall into either this or the next category.

TRICHOME/HASHISH COLLECTION BAGS
(Yum.)

120μ --Generally considered the start of what you want.  Trichomes form Sativas will collect more on the smaller size bags, whereas with indicas you will see more quality stuff at this layer.

110μ

100μ

90μ

75μ

73μ -- :bong2: :bong:  :psybong:

72μ

70μ

55μ

50μ

49μ

45μ

THE FINAL BAG
(Anything that drains below the final bag is not worth collecting, so the size of the final filtering screen is important.  This final bag is a low yielder and is most often considered lower-quality than the above micron sizes. Higher-quality when using a sativa as starting material.)

38μ --This seems like it would be a great alternative to the more common 25μ size if the quality of the 25μ was substandard. From Mila's Ice-O-Lator bags.

35μ

33μ

25μ --A common size bag most often used as the final bag.

20μ --Sounds tiny to me, but I haven't done runs with small-gland pure sativa material before.

SPECIAL MENTION

1. I didn't use Ebay as the source for any of this information on availability, and you should not waste money on cheap or counterfeit bags offered at any auction sites.

2.  Please mention any bag sizes I may have missed.

3.  When you hear of folks using more than eight bags for a run, they are running the material first in a series of workbags in one bucket, than the hash-laden water is run by itself through a second series of bags in a second bucket.  This is sometimes referred to as a "second-run" but is not to be confused with a second run of the starting material itself.
The first bucket of workbags will start with a 220μ bag to mix in and end with something in either the 190μ or 160μ range.

Absolute Rating vs. Nominal Rating [Re: Psuper]
    #490002 - 10/21/10 01:09 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Here's a source for some filtration bags and filter devices that fit on top of 5-gallon buckets; all for only a few dollars becaaaauuuussssee these are for bio-diesel filtration:
http://utahbiodieselsupply.com/filters5gallon.php
***I have not used anything from this site as of yet, just thought this was interesting. Here's some of what they have:

A 4" deep inset in 200μ, 100μ, or 75μ sizes.

7"x16" and 7"x32" poly mesh filter bags available in nominal micron sizes of 200μ, 100μ, 50μ, 25μ, and 10μ.

12"x12" piece of 177μ stainless steel.

...and some other stuff as well.

Again, I haven't used anything from this website, but I am thinking that the bio diesel equipment suppliers could potentially be a very good source for dirt cheap hash making supplies!
:potleaf:

Here's a link to an article that explains the difference between absolute rating vs. nominal rating for filters:
http://www.lenntech.com/library/fine/absolute/absolute-nominal-filters.htm
**This is an important distinction to understand if ordering screens from random sources.

Lots of good information here, thank you!

I'm curious about these bio diesel filters.  They look great, although it would be a bit more work-intensive doing one filter at a time.  My one main concern would be the lack of a 73µ filter or anything right under that, like 70µ.  It seems like with the 75µ inset, a good portion of the glands will fall through and end up in your 50µ bag, which is the next smallest size.  That might not be so bad, though.  Thoughts?

Oh, and great "absolute vs. nominal rating" link too.  +5 for this whole post.

The "traditional" place to obtain cheap micron rated screens (for dry sieving) is to use silkscreen from an art supply sources such as Dickblick. HOWEVER, "silkscreen" is just a term nowadays- what you want is actually polyester or nylon monofilament mesh. What you find at the art store or in links like the one above are multifilament.

....orrrr you want metal screens. Here's a list of commercially available dry-sift metal screens I've seen:
140u
120u
107u
70u
63u

Here's a link for a single 140u screen:
http://www.bcboxes.com/orderscreens.html

Metal screens with a 45u, and 100u size in squares of different sizes can be had off of ebay right now as well.

Here's a link for a mesh to micron conversion table:
http://greasebenz.com/mesh.html

If money is not an issue than you can order 3' metal screens in a bunch of different sizes from the following company:
https://www.elkofiltering.com/index.cfm?carttoken=249X7JX100710115541&Action=ViewCategory&Category=2156

Here's another link for 8" round stainless steel screen, some are expensive:
http://www.humboldtmfg.com/sieves.php?sievenum=0

EDIT: Although most sizes are not currently available, I did find the following size metal mesh screens on amazon.com for only $8-$13:

125u --brass mesh
63u --stainless steel
53u --stainless steel

Perhaps they'll restock there supply of other sizes in the future.  An $8 140u stainless steel screen would be nice.

woven monofilament polyethylene (polyster mesh screen) [Re: Psuper]
    #490651 - 10/23/10 04:19 AM (13 years, 4 months ago)

The fabric of a bubblebag is a high threadcount nylon material that is lightly coated with some kind of plastic on the inside.  The mesh filter screen is woven polyester monofilament mesh.  Polyethylene (polyester) and nylon mesh screens are available from amazon.com in 12" x 12" and 12" x 24" sizes, often for just a few dollars, in the following sizes:

250μ
210μ

...and some others I skipped/missed. On the website the polyethylene screens are labeled as "polyester mesh", nylon is simply "nylon".

A whole number of uses for these.  Use polyester mesh instead of nylon for water filtration (as nylon is hygroscopic), preferrably.

monofilament vs. multifilament polyester [Re: Psuper]
    #492032 - 10/26/10 08:58 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Once you know the size(s) of filter material you want, the other distinction to understand besides the difference in a nominal vs. absolute rating for filters is whether the nylon or polyethylene mesh is monofilament or multifilament.  Here's an article explaining the distinction:
http://www.shfilters.com/corporate-blog/monofilament-vs-multifilament-polyester-printing-mesh.html

I should have linked the info in this post in post#2 of this thread, but, as I mention in post#4, the material you want is the monofilament and not the multifilament polyester.  It is this woven polyester monofilament mesh that water hash bag filters are made from.

As the article linked above in this post points out, most of the "silkscreen" and printing cloths you find online and at craft stores is going to be multifilament.  It isn't that this multifilament polyester won't work, it is that the monofilament mesh holes will retain there rated size much better and that the monofilament filter itself is more durable.

Multifilament mesh has a rating with "xx" (example: 10xx) in its rating while monofilament does not. The monofilament I link to that is for sale on Amazon.com lets you know the thread diameter in a micron and a millimeter measurement.

pressing screens [Re: Psuper]
    #495977 - 11/07/10 12:20 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

Iam glad you guys like/appreciate what the thread's about.  Here's a couple more things:

Pressing Screens
Pressing screens, dabbing screens, blotting screens, drying screens(all the same thing), are made of the same mesh as a bags filter and are most often a 25μ size.  "Name-brand" pressing screens cost $15 and are only 10" x 9.5".

Some ice hash makers don't really like the term "pressing" screen. Many don't fold the screen over and press the screen with any kind of force. The screen is instead left on top of the layer of absorbent paper towels  for a little while before being folded over and being gently "dabbed" at with a fistfull of paper towels.

I have seen these screens commercially available in the three following sizes:

33μ
25μ
20μ

:ganja:

An actual silk handkerchief can be used in lieu of monofilament mesh if you don't have a dabbing screen.

UPDATED, On Application of Mesh Material of Different Plastics, Fixed mistakes, stuff [Re: Psuper]
    #498677 - 11/16/10 07:01 PM (13 years, 4 months ago)

The whole entire above thread has been UPDATED and is current and accurate as of November 2010.

:psybong:

Misinformation in Different Forums
Just two intermingling points here: I've browsed through many, many threads in numerous "hash forums" around the interwebz and constantly see links to China-based industrial supply companies that manufacture mesh materials which obviously aren't going to sell a few dollars worth of items to you and me.  There's none of that in my above links.  Folks are also constantly supplying links to art supply sources (like I mention and link to above) for the multifilament mesh instead of the monofilament.

:psybong:

On Application of Mesh of Different Materials

Ice Hash, Bubble Hash ---The mesh material for the filter of quality ice water extraction bags is woven monofilament polyester mesh.

Iso Hash, Solvent filtering  --The mesh material should be stainless steel, because of it's resistance to corrosion (though I've used a single piece of brass mesh for some quick-wash iso runs).  Another choice, depending upon the solvent or whatever chemical chosen, such as any alcohol, would be the polyethylene (polyester) woven monofilament mesh.  The reason to choose the polyethylene instead of the nylon is that the polyethylene mesh has greater resistance to acids and organic solvents. Iam going to switch to using two pieces of polyethylene mesh when I do quick-wash iso, for example.

Dry Sieve ---Stainless steel (or other metal) is great and is what commercially available kief screens are usually made from.  The second best choice is nylon woven monofilament mesh because the resistance to abrasion of nylon mesh surpasses that of polyethylene (polyester) mesh.  The polyethylene mesh, third-best choice, is sometimes cheaper and available in different sizes from the nylon.

Again, for dry sieving the multifilament "silkscreen" that everyone talks about will work, but doesn't resist changing of hole sizes like the monofilament meshes mentioned above.  There's even pictures from Bubbleman on his website where he cuts the screen from one of his bubblebags and uses it to dry sift some buds.

I figured as much. It's just as fun for me to play dumb and point it out.

I love pretending not to understand peoples sarcasm or figure of speeches.

Fries and gravy, eh. Most ya Americans think poutine is gross? When I was in NYC I saw a man eat 2lbs of meat and 1lb of cheese at a deli and he said poutine was disgusting and unhealthy. I wanted to ask him if he thought cold cheese was better for him than the melted variety.

Poutine is top notch hangover food, if you think that's bad the dutch (i think its the dutch) dip their fries in pure mayo as a sauce.  I love mayo, but goddamn, that shit just turns my stomach lol.  Now, mix in some mayo with some ketchup.....
