US Government Apologizes to Native Americans
    #432219 - 06/13/10 01:49 PM (13 years, 9 months ago)

Quote:

Department of Defense Appropriations Act 2010
APOLOGY TO NATIVE PEOPLES OF THE UNITED STATES
SEC. 8113. (a) ACKNOWLEDGMENT AND APOLOGY.—
The United States, acting through Congress—recognizes the special legal and political relationship Indian tribes have with the United States and the solemn covenant with the land we share; commends and honors Native Peoples for the thousands of years that they have stewarded and protected this land; recognizes that there have been years of official depredations, ill-conceived policies, and the breaking of covenants by the Federal Government regarding Indian tribes; apologizes on behalf of the people of the United States to all Native Peoples for the many instances of violence, maltreatment, and neglect inflicted on Native Peoples by citizens of the United States; expresses its regret for the ramifications of former wrongs and its commitment to build on the positive relationships of the past and present to move toward a brighter future where all the people of this land live reconciled as brothers and sisters, and harmoniously steward and protect this land together; urges the President to acknowledge the wrongs of the United States against Indian tribes in the history of the United States in order to bring healing to this land; and commends the State governments that have begun reconciliation efforts with recognized Indian tribes located in their boundaries and encourages all State governments similarly to work toward reconciling relationships with Indian tribes within their boundaries.

DISCLAIMER.—Nothing in this section—authorizes or supports any claim against the United States; or serves as a settlement of any claim against the United States.

Thanks Barracky

This is the first formal apology ever given by the federal government.

We need to get some Native Americans on the Growery so they can hold a gathering on their reservation and we can act outside the law there. Crazy liquor dope and cheesburger parties smoking 6 paper joints.

more like...

DISCLAIMER: We know we fucked you. We're admitting that we fucked you. You can't do shit about it.

The apology I'm o.k. It's the 'thanks' that I have a problem with. "Thank you for watching over this land for thousands of years so that we could come here, kill you, and rape it. Oh, and we're sorry. That is all."

I fucking hate the United States government and most of the American people. Why am I still here? :crankey:

Do you know any Native Americans? Most of them are a bunch of freeloaders who get paid by the US government to live on the reservation and sit around getting shitface drunk all day

What we did was wrong, but so was a lot of shit that happened in the world

They certainly have no problems building casino's every where and taxing ol' whitey.

I live in Arizona. I know plenty of Natives.

They get specifically paid by the government to NOT leave the reservation. And if they want to go to college, they are pretty much guaranteed to go for free.

Nothing like being treated better than everyone else for the hardship your people endured generations and generations before you were even conceived.

Maybe being rounded up into the middle of an economical shit-hole wasteland has something to do with it.

Not all Native Americans live on reservations, get free rides for college, and mooch off the government. There are plenty of people from all racial backgrounds doing these same things.

Completely ignorant statement. You may be surrounded by some undesirables of Native American decent but that doesn't mean that MOST of an entire race of people are as you describe. It's obvious that you've got some hate issues in that direction though and I don't judge you for it, man. It seems to be in our nature as humans to have prejudices towards others.

Sorry, I just find it a bit disgusting that my friend gets paid 300$ a week to live on a reservation. I would easily sign up for that deal if I could. My friend is 1 of 4 siblings in the family, between the 4 of them they pull in 4,800$ a month, tax free. They live in a shithole of a house, but all drive vehicles from 2008 or newer.

MOST, was probably a little excessive. But I wouldnt be at all surprised if it was close to 30-45% who remain on reservations.

The 'natives' in Arizona have more rights than anybody else.  They can choose to live on or off reservation, and on the reservation they are exempt from state laws like smoking bans and high taxes.

I agree with Banez here.  We should stop sending the Indians free food and money just to live on their land.  A huge portion of the men are alcoholic/drug addicts and their children start to use drugs at a very young age (like 2).  One of my girls is volunteering on a reservation in South Dakota now and she tells me about them they are lazy as fuck.

Continually apologizing and treating them like victims certainly doesn't help either.  I worked on the reservation tutoring science and mathematics, the ones I worked with were smart and capable and didn't have a victim mentality.

I highly doubt that.
