spider mites
    #1241 - 04/20/08 01:49 PM (16 years, 2 days ago)

a guy gave SWIM clones. The clones had spider mites on them. Now the plants are starting week 6 of flower. The mite infestion is now starting to become a problem. The colas are starting to be wrapped with webbing from the mites. I'm afraid SWIM has to treat the plants.
SWIM wants to know what will kill or severly disrupt the growth of the mites and is safe to use at this stage of flower.

ps. SWIM just got done spraying all the plants with straight H20 to remove mites and webbing. Need a solution here, cant keep spraying them daily.

Go over to CVS or or Home Depot or something and get some Soap Spray and spray it on the plant and on the soil. After you spray it on the soil, I recommend watering it so the soap will trickle down deep and kill them damn bugs.

Worked for me

Wash all of your plants under your faucet with the spray nozzle make sure to get the underside of the leaves, thats where the mites live and lay the eggs.
do this everday for 5 days.
don't let your plants touch each other.
Mites can be a pain, but if you wash your plants everday for a few days it really helps.

Yeah me too, on ICMag. I read somebody soaking used cig butts in isopropyl alchohol, letting it evaporate, then water and spraying it on their plants every other day until theyr're gone. Don't quote me on the procedure though. Makes sense since nicotine is a hella potent toxin -- but the smell and work and all... bleh.

edit: The tars would probably be in the end product so IMO go with the soap or other products for arachnids and such.

try spraying them down with neem oil or pyrethrum. it's helped me in the past. the faster you act the less damage will be done. they're almost a certain death sentence if not caught soon enough.

good luck.

Look into praying mantis. They are a natural predator to spider mites and will patrol your crops from all sorts of insects. You can get the eggs a lot of places online or some times home depot has them. they are pretty awesome to look at also.

Just saying for a general tool for preventing this problem. Praying mantis will stay in the area of their colony and continue to eat the mites for well past your harvest. I usually get a couple of colonies and space them out. I have never had problems with spider mites or inseacts since.

For what it's worth. SWIM's never had bugs in his grows. He takes very good care of his plants. SWIM received 3 new strains from a 'fake friend'. (a real friend wouldnt give away clones with mites) SWIM didn't notice the bugs until the clones were 5" tall. SWIM treated during VEG. with a homemade solution using lemon, baking soda and apple vinegar. This solution nearly killed off the initial population but eggs eventually hatched and populated the plants.

SWIM would have destroyed the clones instead of flowering them, but this is SWIM's last grow in this house since he is moving. SWIM will also be harvesting during mid week 7 instead of waiting the full 60 days.

His choice was to flower or not to flower. Pretty simple decision there.

SWIM doesn't care about killing off all mites unless there is a easy method, which there isn't. So, SWIM just needs to reduce the mite population enough for the plants to finish. SWIM has been spraying the undersides of the leaves with H2O, effectively blasting mites away.

SWIM also tried using predator mites at the beginning stage of flower. This really didn't do much benefit because the ultra dry winters reduce humidity to <20%. Even using two ultrasonic humidifiers at the same time, it was hard to keep humidity above 40%, so the predator mites died.

SWIM has noticed a huge problem yesterday, the mites have started to infest ALL salvia plants and ALL san pedros, which are in the same room and will be moved when SWIM moves.

PS, SWIM plans on using Kirks suggestion of Prozap insect guard. It is cheap and not harmful to the plants like pesticides. Predator insects are NOT an option because of the said move.

In addition to spraying the underside of the leaf like i recommended, some vasoline around the rim of your pots will prevent the mites from crawling from pot to pot.

Keep your humidity on the high side, the mites like dry conditions.

The trick is to keep spraying for at least a week to get all the newly hatched eggs.
Then continue inspect your plants on a periodic basis.

Good Luck!
