low. needles are very acidic and usually drop soils to around pH 4-5 in coniferous forests

no shit? thats pretty cool! i wonder how all of the plants get along when the ph of a soil is one number and they prefer another. I guess thats why you find certain plants in the same areas because they prefer the ph of the area. Is the ph then directly correlated to the makeup of the soil?

no, pH is just a measure of the number of H+ ions found in the soil (or in water, etc). the makeup of the soil can influence pH but pH rarely influences the makeup of the soil.
you are right about finding certain plants in certain areas, but the pH is hardly the most important factor. nutrient availability, sun supply, water supply etc.
