I thought this is cool. I am somewhat involved in hardware/software hacking and seeing the arduino used for this. Even if you have no knowledge of how to write code etc it would be interesting to read this and not to mention everything is given on the site at least for a few functions. Looking at the code you shouldn't have too much trouble implementing your own functions I know I am going to do this and I'll post pictures when I get out of the hospital and tear apart some of my old hardware.
This is definitely something worth looking in to then. I have several projects I'll be glad to share with you unfortunately the only one that has anything really to do with growing or anything else.
I hope to implement this in to my remote VPN server at the house that way I can monitor it. I just have to scroll through a few things it shouldn't be too difficult.
If you decide to do it let me know I'll help you and hell you'll probably help me somewhere.
