Consider a 400W with a cooltube too much for a 36"x16" cabinet that's 3 feet tall?
Should I just stick with my 250W?

I'm using a 400w for my 28" x 13.5" x 29" cabinet. I think 250w is too little - 400w might be too much, but with a cooltube (which I am also using), heat should be very manageable. Would like to hear some other thoughts too.

Did you make your own cooltube out of an easy bake, or just buy the reflector package?

Have you considered adding a couple of fluoros in there? I would probably go that route. It will be cheaper, and it works.

yeah, but when the HPS is 12 inches above the plant and the fluoros are only 2 inches, won't that cause some weird, uneven growth?

It shouldn't. You will just have to play with it a bit. You'll sort it out before the veg phase is over. Is this a hydro grow? If not, just rotate the plants around.
It is common for fluoros to be used in larger gardens with multiple light. They place them in between the HIDs to help even it out.

How big of a fan do you think I would need for a cab with not quite 11 cubic feet? I want to be able to keep a 400W (or at least a 250W) reasonably cool, so I guess the calculation is more about cooling than reasonable amounts of circulation for the plants.
I'm going to be constructing a small homemade carbon filter btw, so there won't be as much resistance on that end as a can fan (even the smallest size)

I would just get a 4" inline and a fan speed controller. Obviously they don't make them as small as you need it, so this is the best option IMO, and you can control the temp, humidity, and noise produced by the fan. I wouldn't spend a ton of $ on it. I would just try to find a cheaper Active Air fan or equivalent if possible.

yeah, I was thinking about just getting a 4" duct fan 'cause they're usually rated around 80 cfm or so, and then it's only 4" in diameter at it's widest point, which is obviously important when you're in such a tiny space.
I would assume that exhausting the entirety of the air in the cabinet every 10 seconds or so should be sufficient for keeping the temp down, yeah?
