The Official Grateful Dead Hippy Bullshit Thread

When you find yourself grooving the fuck out to a really killer soundboard, post a link!

:gd_icon: :yesnod: :gd_icon:

Right now I'm listening to April 8th, 1985.  Chock full of goodies, and played with a lot of energy:

Midnight Hour-> Walkin' The Dog-> Big Boss Man, Me & My Uncle-> Cumberland Blues, Down In The Bottom-> I Ain't Superstitous, Althea, Tons Of Steel-> Supplication-> Might As Well Revolution, Hell In A Bucket-> Touch Of Gray, Estimated Prophet-> Eyes Of The World-> Drums-> Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad-> Stella Blue-> Around & Around-> Turn On Your Love Light, E: Brokedown Palace

Next up on my platter is the timeless gem with Branford Marsalis, September 10, 1991.  Marsalis + :gd_icon: = :awesome::thumbup:

I guess I'll collect all the links in here for easy browsing

I was never that much of a Puber, I feel more at home in this den of stoners. I'm sure there's got to be other tokers here who listen to the Dead?

Nonsense, no one should be ashamed to have a highly refined musical ear. The Dead are kind of a difficult to wrap your ears around initially, which makes them hard to introduce to people. Their live music is really where all the brilliance happens, but it can initially be hard to orient yourself as a listener... but once you get oriented, they're really the most fun band to listen to that I know of. Behind my computer screen, I'm always bouncing to the beat, singing along with the music.

I'm not out to convert anyone, I just wanted to make this thread for deadheads to post links to good shows. Even if only I ever post in it, it'll still save me time when I don't want to browse around for a new show of unknown quality.

Completely untrue. I think you just have to have a "breakthrough" experience with the Dead, and after that they'll always be enjoyable.

C'mon now, you've already expressed your dislike of the Dead and all that.  I clearly demarked this thread for Official Hippy Bullshit relating to the Grateful Dead to try to avoid the need for folks to bash it as such.

Now if ya don't like the Dead, GTFO

WHAT???

ur nuts. the first time i heard The Dead, was when i wasnt doing ANY drugs due to being on papers, and my friend just put in a jam. might have been a live version of dark star...i dont remember, and i was basking in the sun just jammin and i realized this is one of the greatest bands of all times...

they played just to play. they played specifically for their fans. they only had 1 top ten hit i believe, but they didnt care. their following is the biggest in history yet they never sold out. they made music and toured for like 40 years...

they were playin garage shows with ken kesey when we were all in diapers...

PIONEERS...real musicians...i LOVE them.

DEAD HEAD TO THE BONE!!!

ill post some awesome live shit if i need to...

We're gonna have to get a fat '67 Viola Lee Blues up in this thread :yesnod:

And Dark Stars, there's ones that can really surprise you from even in their later years.  Those '69 and '70 ones always get me though.

yeah, theres one cd set that was studio disc one, and live disc two, and it had the BEST studio stuff ive ever heard. it had "Ripple" "Shakedown Street"...fuck i cent remember what else was on it

but on the live disk, one night while really stoned, i was listening to a song, dont remember which one, but they were battling with their guitars, and the rest of the band was following which ever guitar they were getting the best vibe from, and the music played the story of the death and resurection of Christ...it was AMAZINGLY BEAUTIFUL.....when music can give you that, its from the souuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuul...these guys were in my opinion are musicians who played to win Gods heart....like David

They do not have good albums. They have some acceptable albums. But nothing they ever did in the studio could hold a candle to their live performances. I think the best exposure to them would be to follow the links here... which of their live stuff is "best" really varies a lot depending on what styles of music you're inclined to... i really like the early stuff (1966-1971) and the peak years with Brent (1979-1982, 1985, 1989-1990). But there are definintely gems hidden throughout their entire career. The Dicks Picks series highlights some of these.

If you really want to listent to studio albums, I guess American Beauty, Workingman's Dead, and Terrapin Station would be my recommendations.

Early GD is wonderful. Once they got all phishy and jammy, they lost me.

Workingman's Dead is the best album.

I also love GD philosophy. Dead Headz.

Speaking of early Grateful Dead, check out October 25th, 1969 @ the Winterland.  The recording is missing the first helf-dozen songs of the concert, but the selection that's survived the years is phenomenal.  We get the end of the set: Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > Turn On Your Love Light, with Stephen Stills joining in for Lovelight.

Glad to see there's other stoner Deadheads out there.  Great links so far.

:gd_icon::hamsterdance::gd_icon:

(Edit:  Oh, and if people aren't aware, you can download the "stream-only" concerts from archive.org by changing "details" to "download" in the address bar.  It'll bring you to a directory with all of the files, usually in several formats)

(Edit #2:  Post #420 FTW!)

You go to the concert you want to download. It'll have a web address like: http://www.archive.org/details/gd69-10-25.sbd.jagla.81.sbefail.shnf

If I want to download it, I change it to: http://www.archive.org/download/gd69-10-25.sbd.jagla.81.sbefail.shnf

Yeah, you can't download the zip of the whole concert, you have to download the songs individually. There are programs which will do this for you (tell it to download *.mp3 from the folder, you can go back through and delete the 64kbps files later).

You must have clicked on one of the zipped archives. All of the individual songs (the mp3, shn, etc files) can be downloaded, and won't give you that error. Tha's what I'm talking about.

(Look for the gdsomething.txt file, it will give the set list, correlating the songs to the file names.

Here's a nice one:  May 12th, 1966.

Viola Lee Blues, One Kind Favor, I Know You Rider, You See A Broken Heart, It's A Sin, BIODTL, Heads Up Jam, Next Time, Death Don't, Midnight Hour

Amazingly clear sound quality for early 1966 .  And to top it off, it's a excellent set list, and a high energy night (at one point you can here one of the boys say "I need some coke" before a little break:lol:).  I don't think this one was up when I last dug through '66.  It's really a stand-out... a nice snapshot of the Dead back when they were a blues band.

Edit: Hot damn, this set is smoking.  I've listened to it before, but it sounded like it'd come through several genreations of tapes, just didn't do the set this sort of justice.  This shit rocks my socks off.

I ran across this May 13th, 1981 show (27 years ago today) this morning, just looking for a Sailor>Saint to groove to. The quality of the show really impressed me, and I ended up listening all the way through the 2nd set... including the Good Lovin' finale (normally I don't like Good Lovin' with Bobby singing). Good stuff, very tasteful Stella Blue and Brokedown Palace. I'm halfway through the first set now, and it's almost as good. This show really has the feeling of '81 at its best.

Here's an outstanding '72: May 11th, 1972 in Rotterdam.

The '72 European was full of great shows. With Keith and Donna, the Dead were beginning to explore some new sound. Pigpen was becoming quite ill (from drinking his liver into oblivion) but he still had the energy to bring down the house on some tunes (Mr. Charlie, Chinatown Shuffle, Two Souls In Communion, Next Time You See Me, Caution (Do Not Stop on Tracks)-> Who Do You Love). Top notch stuff.

The entire second set of 5/13 is pretty much golden.

But definitely give that Rotterdam show a listen when you get a chance. It's great throughout (especially that Chinatown Shuffle, and Two Sould in Communion), but what really makes it is the Dark Star > Sugar Mag > Caution > Who Do You Love? > Truckin' > Uncle John's Band. I'm kind of surprised that it hasn't been released commercially.

There are times that you can beckon
There are times when you must call
You can shake a ton of reckoning
But you can't shake it all
There are times when I can help you out
And times that you must fall
There are times when you must live in doubt
And I can't help at all

One blue star / Sets on the hill
Call it back / You never will
One more star / Sinks in the past
Show me something / Built to last.

Built to last till time itself
Falls tumbling from the wall
Built to last till sunshine fails
And darkness moves on all
Built to last while years roll past
Like cloudscapes in the sky
Show me something built to last
Or something built to try

-------------------------

Tomorrow I'll dig through my favorites of '89 and find one with a rendition that does this song justice. Every once in a while I get really bummed out thinking where the band might've gone if Brent hadn't passed so early.

I turn and walk away
then I come ‘round again
It looks as though tomorrow
I’ll do pretty much the same.

I must turn down your offer
but I’d like to ask a break
You know I’m ready to give
everything for anything I take.

Someone called my name you know
I turned around to see
It was midnight in the
Mission and the bells were not for me.

Come again, walking along
in the Mission in the rain,
Come again, walking along
in the Mission in the rain,

Ten years ago, I walked this street
my dreams were riding tall
Tonight I would be thankful Lord,
for any dream at all.

Some folks would be happy
just to have one dream come true
But everything you gather is just
more that you can lose.

Come again, walking along
in the Mission in the rain,
Come again, walking along
in the Mission in the rain,

All the things I planned
to do I only did half way
Tomorrow will be Sunday
born of rainy Saturday.

There’s some satisfaction
in the San Francisco rain
No matter what comes down
the Mission always looks the same.

Come again, walking along
in the Mission in the rain.

- mission in the rain

that song has got some really good truth in it "everything you gather is just
more that you can lose" thats very true

peace out Dm

This here is a monster of a show.  Sound quality is top notch and the band is firing on all cyclinders.  On top of that, the setlist is phenomenal.  It includes a soul-melting Built to Last (as promised), as well as We Can Run (one of my favorite Brent tunes).  Other than that, the first set is extremely solid.

But as great as the first set is, the real draw of this show is in the second set.  They kick off with a jammed out Playing>Uncle John's Band>Playing, then casually veer into an epic Dark Star (which at that point hadn't been played in 5 years!).  Dark star wanders into Drums&Space, and a nice Death Don't Have No Mercy meanders out of the tail end of Space, followed by Dear Mr Fantasy>Hey Jude Finale.  Throwing Stones and Good Lovin' wrap things up.

But that's not all.  For the finale, the boys bust out Attics of My Life, which they hadn't played live since 1972.  This is really a stand-out show, and I wouldn't be surprised if it gets released in the next couple years.  Download before it's too late!

Peace out Dm

The first five tracks are tight and solid, but nothing too out of the ordinary.  Then Bobby announces that the band has a special guest, and Branford Marsalis joins in on sax for the rest of the show.  Marsalis always breathed fresh life into the Dead's jams, and Marsalis+Mydland is just :awesome:.

Normally I'm not too partial to 1973, but this show is just smokin'. There were a lot of technical difficulties with the equipment that night, but the quality is high regardless, after a few glitches in the opening tune. I'll let the setlist speak for itself:

Promised Land, Row Jimmy, Black Throated Wind, Deal, Me & My Uncle, Sugaree, Looks Like Rain, Loose Lucy, Mexicali Blues, Brown Eyed Women, El Paso, Here Comes Sunshine, Playin' In The Band China Cat Sunflower-> I Know You Rider, Jack Straw, They Love Each Other, Truckin'-> Eyes Of The World-> China Doll, Big River, Ramble On Rose, Box Of Rain, Wave That Flag, Sugar Magnolia, Uncle John's Band, Around & Around, E: Casey Jones

I haven't seen any video interviews from that period, but I've got a book (Conversations with the Dead) full of interview transcrpts with different band and crew from the early '80s... it's nice because the interviewers are actually Dead fans who grasp the music to an extent they can discuss it with the band intelligently.

Got a link? Otherwise I'll keep my eye out.

I have a question. Where do they get all these songs that they performed live??

They have like 2 studio albums or something & a lot of the songs aren't on those.

When the Dead wrote a song, it would get worked out and explored in their live shows before it ever made it onto a studio album. Some songs never made it onto studio albums because they "weren't quite good enough"... this was apparently the case with the late-60s tune Mason's Children (though the song is very far from not being good enough)

They wrote most of their songs, but they also play a large number of covers from a variety of artists. They convered Bob Dylan most frequently (starting in their very early career, but incorparating many more of his tunes near the end of the 80s) and the Beatles were runner-up, but they played tunes from all sorts of people: Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, Willie Dixon, Jesse Fuller, Kris Kristofferson, Blind Willie Johnson...

So yeah, I think they mostly got their songs by someone in the band having an idea for an interesting arrangement, and that arrangement getting fleshed out in the live arena. On the occasions when they tried to make studio albums to add songs to their repetoire, it didn't work so well (I'm thinking of Wake of the Flood and Blues for Allah) and the songs didn't necessarily make it into rotation. In their later career they gave up on that idea entirely, and let their live repetoire pretty much speak for itself; the band's one Top-Ten hit, Touch of Gray, was released commercially in 1986, though the band had been playing the song live since early '83.

don't know much about the grateful dead, I'm way more into jimmy hendrix, pink floyd, black sabbath, the who, cream, and deep purple or led zepplin. I guess that limits my 70s experience, I'm sur there's more shit that I can think of.

I see a lot of people making statements like that.  The thing is, the Dead played countless styles of music over their long career... Are you saying every single style they played was an awful excuse for music?

They played electric blues; they played acoustic folk; they played electric folk; they played energetic driving rock; they played soulful ballads; they played psychedelic noisy jams.  I can understand not liking some, or even most of their material.  But I think the Dead have some music for just about everyone's taste.

What I like? That ranges from Lou Reed to Massive attack, from Stevie ray Vaughn to Blind Lemon Jefferson, from ween to the flaming lips.

It's not what GD play or the styles they play, it's how they play it. Sounds like a highschool marching band on DXM.

I know many deadheads don't care for this song since it was "commercialized" But it's one of my favorites. Great pick me up song.

Yes, is a good song.  Fun to sing a long with.  I never cared that it got a lot of radio play.  Did it also have a MTV video?

Good vid.  Never seen it before.  Brought back memories.  I never did long tours.  After about 8-10 shows I was ready to head home and spend some time sorting through my headspace and things I experienced.

Thanks!

Went to see Terrapin Flyer last Friday night. Rode the elevator in our hotel up with the lead guy..who was very cool. Had some friends come up to our hotel room and the drummer Jim Farmer showed up and hung with us pre party in our room. We had a balcony and stuff so we could smoke it up in the room.  I asked how he got up to our floor cuz you needed a security key to in..and he said he just took the elevator to the 15th floor then took the stairs up to floor 16 and knocked on our door... lol nice security feature. I guess he came back up about 5am (we fb messaged) but we had just gotten into bed..he didnt hear anything going on so he left.  Pretty cool night.

My back might need protection
