It sucks because I really love the grateful dead and their songs have deeply impacted my life in a myriad of ways. I am younger and never got to see any Jerry shows (just a bunch of phish shows ) so me and my GF got really excited when we heard about the Chicago thing. After putting all my money in to money orders and then going for Santa Clara and getting shut out too i just kind of gave up. I am not going to spend 2000 bucks to go to a fucking shithole city to see bobby fuck up simple ass songs. I just think I'd have a melt down seeing all the kids who don't know the music or even care about anything except their stupid flatbills covered in hippie trinkets and selling LSD in exchange for lot cred and currency and probably more hippie trinkets.
I love the Grateful Dead as much as the next shroomery faggot but fuck this thing left a salty taste in my mouth. I feel even more heartbroken for the real older heads who wanted to see the core members together one last time and can't because it is ridiculously expensive and impossible to acquire tickets. It's a bummer that I never got to see my favorite band but at least I have almost come to peace with it. Also, I find comfort in the fact that even though these shows are touted as "grateful dead" shows they arent. It's an older, sloppier bobby, phil, mickey, and billy. Jerry made the atoms move.
Here's a list of all the keyboard players the dead went through from 65-95: -Pigpen -TC -keith -brent -vince -Hornsby (kinda)
All of them died or left the band or both. The grateful dead continued through the 80s and 90s and then jerry died and they started touring as "The Dead." It's funny that you can go through 6 keyboard players, all of which sang at least a little (tc excluded) and but none of them were important enough to warrant a name change. The only death that changed the name of the band was Jerry's. Granted lots of 80s Dead was absolute garbage, but it was still the grateful dead. Without Jerry there is no Grateful Dead.
The Hunter/Garcia conglomerate shits on anything else the dead ever had or will have. These shows are shit and pete shapiro is an asshole for not taking real fans in to consideration a little more. Straight up, I am pissed off about it. I don't know a single person who is going that could name 3 players off that keyboard players list . Everyone I know going is going for the fucking party and that is it. They will say it was great and it will be mediocre...because let's get real, name 1 thing EXCEPTIONAL any single member of the band has done since spring/summer of 90. Meanwhile a bunch of the best old heads I know are shut out. And me and my gf who both love the grateful dead are too.
It sucks. I am in love with the grateful dead but at least this isn't them, even though it was the closest shot I will ever get.
/hippie dippie melt
If you actually want to experience the grateful dead just steal american beauty off the internet and listen to it in your room and cry your eyes out and feel what it's like to be a human being here on the planet earth in the milkway galaxy of the universe. That is a far more important than anything that will happen at soldier field.

Lol is that a huge stadium with a huge stage facing one way? Sucks for all the people in the back.
Why wouldnt they put the stage in the center with a 360 view?

The stage had a giant screen behind it. Even if you were behind the stage you would still have an awesome show.

They basically had people put in "orders" for tickets and from those "orders" they chose random people. This was to deter Scalpers.and it worked pretty well.

Of course claypool would be there. I know they influenced a bunch of bands and members play together in side stuff.
I just never got any of their music and never had friends that were really into them.
Im not saying theyre bad or anything, i just never got into them and all this thread is is how they used be good and now suck so i dunno.
I dont know a single song from them. Maybe you all could reccomend me some so when i can finally blaze again in a few weeks i can check em out.

I love american beauty but my suggestion would be europe 72. I think 72 represents the peak of their live performance. There were great shows in 77/78 and 90 but I think the dead with 1 drummer sounds the best. Try europe 72, and if you like it then you like the dead! I kind of feel like American Beauty doesn't necessarily represent what the dead did best, but it's a hell of an album. Workingman's Dead is a little more gritty and raw, and wins that battle for me every time. AB is my 3rd favorite studio dead album.
