Ok so I started my first grow today, I had a buddy who was nice enough to give me four feminized plants ready to go into fruiting.
My grow area is a closet space 6x3x8, there is a shelf at about 6" so I figure i can section the shelf area off and put clones there with CFL.
I currently have a ghetto rigged ballast hooked up to a 150Watt HPS with dome reflector and the light is on a 12/12 timer.
In addition I have a box fan in the closet with the doors cracked about 1" on each slider to move air and exchange intake/exhaust.
This fan sucks air from one side, pushes it at a 45 angle to the back, which whirlpools around the plants, and to the other side where it escapes. Is this appropriate?
Should I leave the fan on 24/7? or put it on the 12/12 timer?
I would like to make max use of this area so how many plants should I attempt?
Also, how much wattage can I use without worrying about heat? I was thinking 600, but looks like most recommend a 400.

You could probably fit a 600 in there, but I would just stick to a 400. Your fan sounds fine, as long as the plants move with the breeze they should have good venhilation and will get stronger. The number of plants is pretty much up to you, your going to have to take a bunch of clones and root them so I would worry about that first. Also, I'm not sure if I like the sound of this ghetto-rigged ballast.

NO worries, its a broken ballast that was rewired.
And ive got a 400 digital system air cooled coming soon.

600W is A ok. Nothing better really. Keep an eye on the temp until you sort it out. Shouldn't be a prob with an oscillating fan. It sounds like the air flow is good. What about your exhaust? What do you have. How many true cfm after you attach the carbon scrubber?
I wouldn't use a rewired ballast unless the manufacturer did it. I would do about 20 2' plants btw. It will do fine.
