Soil that retains water?
    #142914 - 11/09/08 05:54 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Hi, I just put some seeds outside to germ in some 1/3 poting mix, 1/3 peat, 1/3 perlite. I like this mix very well it seems to be very good for roots and i have seen others get results w/ it. only problem is is that outside now during the day it gets up to atleast mid 70's and the humidity is very low, low 20%. Basicly the soil drys up VERY quickly, i water them in the morning at 7 and the top of the soil is almost bone dry by 2 oclock.

my question is- does anyone know a similar mix of soil that would retain water very well? I like the potting mix and peat combo i am using, do you think doing the same mix except substituting the perlite for vermiculite would suit my needs?

No dont eliminate the perlite entirely just add 1 part vermiculite. Worm castings also retain fairly well and will boost your plants.

you don't need your soil to be wet mang.

if you water every day I'm sure you'll be fine.

Don't water by dryness of top soil. Water by weight. Pick up the pots and see if they feel light like they do when you first loaded them up with soil. If they're not that light then the bottom of the pot can still be wet and you're giving your girls wet feel :frown:.

that's a good way to go about it.

Having dry soil isn't a bad thing as long as the plant has sufficient and frequent uptake of water. Roots like oxygen.

For that reason (roots neading oxygen) coco is supposed to preform well and has gained mucho popularity recently. (over the years)

Sounds like water polymer crystals are perfect for your situation.

They are little grains that absorbs hundreds of times their weight in water (literally, a tablespoon put in a gallon of water creates a gallon of solid gel in a few minutes).

As the soil dries out and contracts, the crystals are gently squeezed and release water as needed.  This expansion/contraction allows you to store extra water in your potted plants without creating water logged soil conditions.

Also, as mentioned, compost, worm castings, and vermiculite also help retain moisture.

i wouldnt bother with polymer crystals unless you are guerilla growing, just by a pre packaged mix thats designed to retain water, like this,
