help me make a good soil mix!
    #91126 - 07/23/08 11:00 AM (15 years, 7 months ago)

here's the ingredients i have laying around:

aged horse manure
used coffee grounds
coco coir
perlite
vermiculite
sphagnum peat moss
miracle grow moisture control potting mix
blood meal

a lot of this is leftover mushroom supplies, but im thinking i should be able to make a pretty good soil mix for the clones i have rooting right now.  so tell me in what ratios i should mix this stuff up to make a good mix that wont need fertilizers to be added all the time.

here's a ratio we were just discussing in irc:

20% manure, 20% coir, 30% vermiculite, 5% coffee, 5% perlite, 20%potting soil,  and oyster shells added to buffer

i'd axe the coffee grounds, too easy to throw off your PH.  Coffee is highly acidic.  The blood meal is a great source of N.

I'd also say more along the lines of 10 - 15% perlite, it takes more than you think to actually notice it in the mix, I would use upwards of 30 percent but I also like to let them dry out every day then water every other

Also definately consider worm castings! I've had good experiences with this in the past, used alonside manure... :potleaf:

Take your Coco Coir, Perlite, Vermiculite, Peat Moss, and mix them together and add your horse manure and blood meal in to a point where its uniformly distributed in the soil.

I'd also pick up some Dolomite Lime and Worm Castings and give them a good mix.

Just be sure to not mix the blood meal in too high a quantity as it has the most potential for burning your plants.

just remember all of these substrates have no nutes.  if you use a mix with a high % of these you will have to feed with lots of liquid nutes when the horse manure/meal/castings lose their magic.

Top dressing the soil with more nutrient rich material is also an option, if you add it a few weeks before the plant will need it, this gives the soil time to break down the material nutrients. Just put a layer around the plant (not to close to the stem) and just kind of work it into the soil with your fingers.

aged horse manure
used coffee grounds - no, too acidic
coco coir - whatever amount u want
perlite - up to 35-40%
vermiculite - no, holds too much water and it's not airy - I find no use for verm
sphagnum peat moss -
miracle grow moisture control potting mix - I dont use miracle grow
blood meal - an amendment - composting suggested

Id say soil, coco, perlite

Here's some mixes I've used

35% perlite
35% coco
20% soil
10% worm castings
1 handful of guano

35% spagnum moss
35% perlite
15% worm casting
10% guano
5% mix of trace minerals, wahsed sand, granulated charcoal, and volcanic ash

I like the first one more.

That would be a soil-less mixture.  Plants grow great in coir but need supplemental nutrients (and the coir needs to be cleaned and "charged" before using).  Manure, blood meal and coffee grounds would make good compost inputs if you wanted to truly build a soil.  Soil is complex and living, and isn't the product of mixing ingredients together.  Greetings.

Why are you guys bumping 4 year old threads?  Please don't do this unless it's really going add something of value to spark up good conversation.

Guys?  It was a 12 minute old thread when I posted lol.  I browse by the 'active topics' link and this thread was right at the top.

I don't think anyone was intentionally bumping an old thread.  I'll try to check the dates of the OP in the future, though.

BTW is there a 'new posts' link that I'm missing or is the 'active topics' link the only way to see new posts across all forums?

Thanks.  I figured it was this site's equivalent.  I'm used to seeing the time/date/username of the last post, as well as an icon letting me know if I posted in it and that's what I was looking for.  This format will take a bit of getting used to but I think I'll be fine

you can try almost any combinations. just make sure that the PH is on the right level. Also make sure that your substrate is airy so the roots can breathe easily.
soil and coco coir does wonders +worm castings if you can get it. you can always feed them with organic liquid nutrients.
