 3 plants growing question

hi,
I recently became a medical marijuana patient and will be moving into my own place soon. I wanted to set up a small area there dedicated to growing a few plants, three to be exact. I was wondering what type of light I should use for growing 3 plants? The plants will be regular cannabis plants, in other words NOT autoflowers. I would be satisfied with one plant actually, but the thing is I wanted to grow three different strains. Would I need a 400w HPS light in order to grow three regular plants to full maturity? Or would that not be enough? I really want to avoid expensive/fancy equipment like LED's, etc.

A 400w should be fine. But rule of thumb is you want 50 watts per every square foot.

thanks. I was also wondering, could CFL be used for both stages of growing? Or only vegetative cycle? I really wanted to grow from CFL because it seems like easiest and most cost-effective way, also it doesn't burn up so much energy. Could I flower too with strong high wattage CFL's?

I would go with a lower power hid (400w) over a high power cfl.
