That's cool man, I'm trying to get into either Fox or Sony as a Graphic Designer atm. How's the work as a prop designer?
It's fun, I came from the automotive field over once I was given an opportunity to permit. You have to be a permit before you can actually work for fox. You need to work 30 days then pay your union dues(whatever union your skill is covered under) I had to pay 6700 bucks to get into mine. You can't make payments. Minimum pay for me is 39 bucks an hour average is 42 bucks an hour and we work 10 hour days minimum so always at least 2 hours overtime. So it works itself out after the initial hit of 6700. Making props is fun, it can be a pain in the ass sometimes depending what we are doing, and I am still apprenticing as everything they do in the studios is honestly half-assed, and can be off 1/16 and everything will still be fine. LOL i couldn't do that in finish carpentry thats for damn sure LOL. Nothing we use is like it should. We use lauan to simulate dry wall, we use a lot of 1 by, ill try to post some pics. Technically we arent supposed to take them, but we can if its for our portfolio and this show is already on the air so I should be good lol.

So you're saying they half ass jobs? It makes sense if these sets are used for a single season or episode.

Yeah I got lucky getting in. You more or less have to know someone to get in. Which is honestly unfair.
Yeah we half ass a lot of things lol. I mean it still has to look good, but if it's 1/16th off in the end, no biggy, no one is going to really trip. I mean you want your work to be good don't get me wrong, but it's nothing like finish carpentry where you have to be down to the 1/64th and 32ths. and shit.
Yes... You have no idea... More or less everyone does some type of drug there... Acid(all kinds) marijuana, and alcohol are the most common, then a lot of people still do uppers. Not into them so i don't get that into them lol.

Everything. The houses we build are all fake. 60-70 percent of them are single sided "walls" We only have to double face certain walls if the angle of the shot requires it and thats up to the director to tell the art department to tell us lol. When you see shows go to different areas that aren't the norm, they are called "location" and we sometimes build that too.
Recently I was working on modern family and we had to build a bathroom scene where we have to pad the tub because the fat gay guy(not trying to sound mean I just honestly don't know his name lol) is supposed to hit his head and "break" his arm. IDK if it aired yet as I don't watch the show. Another recent one(last year) I did was Life in Pieces. There were about 15 guys to build 3 of the fake houses in a month in a half.Crazy times haha. I think the staircase/handrail I built above is in the theme song/opening but i could be wrong.. I dont watch that show either. I would love to work on American Horror story.
