So here's another little update; so far I've yet to go to MEPS (the place they screen you basically) and I'm starting to have second thoughts, again, as to whether I should join the Marines or just go Air Force.

I mean for the most part the only thing the Marines have going for them is 'style' and the fact that they are perceived as more 'gangster'; other than that everything else is shittier than pretty much all of the other branches, especially the air force. Not to mention, in the air force you can pick you job, in the Marines you only get to pick your field.

From quite a few sources of Marines in the infantry apparently it is fucking terrible and sucks extremely bad; they mention that combat is one of the most exhilarating things they've ever experienced, but that's not likely to even happen again for a while, also they have the whole pride thing of being badass, and they talk about how after long training exercises in the field there's a type of pride there too for having undergone a lot of hardship. But I mean, I don't know if that shit is really worth it.

If I go Air Force, I'll be in a job that was ranked in the top 10 most happiest jobs in 2012. Also I'd be able to pick my job, which would likely be a car mechanic, which would give me experience for when I get out. Also the Air Force apparently has the best housing, food; basically everything in the Armed Serviced. And HST actually served in the Air Force...

Last but not least, I'm a small motherfucker, I'm 125lbs 5'5'', and I have slight color-vision issues and a slight concave chest, I just don't think I was built for the Marines. I mean I think I could do it if I really wanted to, but I don't know if I really want to that much...

Shit. I think I'm going to change branches. Advice?

/rant

Hopefully Sleepaid will have stuck around long enough to reply but from an outsider and strictly objective point of view it seems silly to get hung up on a name or a title just for the sake of it, when everything else would be better with a different title.

Do you even have the smarts to be in the AF? What was your practice asvab score?

Yeah that's pretty much what I've been thinking. I'm kind of thinking my only reasoning for joining the Marines is more or less a sense of insecurity, and that I need to prove something and so joining the Marines would be like the biggest way to do that. But I'm starting to realize that may be pretty foolish.

Yeah. I'm relatively smart. Got 90s percentiles all my GED areas (yeah I know it's a GED, it's exactly the same as the high school exit exam though) Also I had like a 3.5 GPA in my 3 years of high school and my 1.5 years in college. lol

Not a genius, but I'd say I'm relatively smart.

That really didn't answer my question on what your practice asvab score was. Also I know the navy requires you to have a certain amount of college credit if you graduated with GED or tier ii school (I.e. adult school). Being the marines is part of the navy I would think it would be the same. Though when I was thinking of enlisting 4 minths ago my recruiter had my do some online stuff that I didn't need college credit. Since I got my diploma from a adult school.

Yeah Marines and Air Force require 15 college credits if you have a GED. I have more than that.
As for my pre-asvab score, the recruiter said it was a 69. Not sure if that's out of a 100 or what though. I've been taking some full-length practice asvab tests at home though too, highest average so far has been ~80% correct.
So I'm pretty confident I have the intelligence to get in.

So you did you end up enlisting?

69 is pretty good. Not sure what the minimal score for the AF is but its 50 for the navy.  And nah in the end I didn't score high enough for the jobs I would be interested in.

Yeah same for the Marines. They said 50 was minimal. Bro you should try and get an asvab prep book and just study it! It brought my score from a 60% to a 80% correct.

I sent you a PM, 336.

In regards to the ASVAB, you'll get a higher score on the actual ASVAB than on the practice test, you can count on that. Your General Technical (GT) score will play a huge part in what jobs you qualify for.

For example, most special operations dudes are expected to have a 110 GT or higher in order to even qualify. When you're in, your GT score gets brought up way more than your actual ASVAB score.

You may well just end up 'proving to yourself' that you will do things against your better judgement and can endure the consequences of a bad decision.

This is a complicated decision for anyone, but it helps a lot to put into context what you're musing about here.

By the way meps is gonna be a long and sucky day. Especially when they strip you down to your underwear and stick you in a large, cold, exam room.

How's your bullet placement?  If I were to do it over again I would stick strictly for sniper.  They love us country boys who learned to hit a specific hair on a deer before we could ride a bike.  Other than that, I doubt I'd want anything to do with it.

If that didn't work, air force mechanic is where I would shoot for.  Us country boys have another thing in common, go cart, quad, dirt bike, truck tinkering.  Building shit.

That's me though.  You need to really search yourself, and get a good idea of what will be asked of you, you know.  Thinking on your toes.  The questions your asking will most likely be the easiest puzzle you'll ever have to solve once you get the ball rolling.

We generally hate people who show up thinking they know how to shoot. They are typically full of bad habits and it is much harder to re-train someone than it is to teach a blank slate.

Your father's experience isn't yours, and neither is it my experience. And my experience is that people who show up sounding like you generally can't shoot for shit, but think they can, and are much harder to re-train because of the ego they've developed over a skill they don't actually have.
