Germination masterminds, please consider...
    #722442 - 03/21/14 11:27 AM (2 years, 8 months ago)

So I dropped some serious fliff on quality genetics recently, and I don't want to bungle things when they get here. I have germinated in paper towels, in rock wool, in jiffy pellets, and by simply dropping into the pot they'll be in. So that said, what are some opinions here on the ULTIMATE way to germinate with maximum success?  I am considering investing in a heating mat and humidity dome, but not sure if it's overkill.

Thoughts appreciated; added a poll for fun.

Ive always done it the wet paper towel way... never had a problem.

I just spent some cash for the first time on quality seeds. Out three in paper towel and all three cracked and had a tap root within 24 hours!  They are in soil now waiting to sprout... Hoping for the best!

Wet paper towel is the way to go.  But when it comes down to it, if they are going to germinate, the will.  Don't fret so much.

I used to soak my seeds in water for 24hrs., and then plant them in peat, verm and perlite peat pots.  I would keep this in a seedling tray so I could bottom water.

hey man I was waiting to talk to you

about your ? tho

I had a good friend drop off a collection of cultivation books from hell  I got the Jorge Cervantes, ed Rosenthal, greg green and a shitload others and ive been reading the hell out of em particularly the organic soma method

Ive always done the paper towel Tupperware thing in the 15 years ive been growing but he uses the cup of water way stating that a fella tears up the water roots using the paper towel method no matter how careful you are

me thinks I might do it his way this time around as I also for the first time I might add spent a wad on some seeds and from the same place you did at about the same time you did which brings me to what I want to talk to you about

Well if something has been working, and I assume working well, for 15 years, why adjust it.  If you were having issues I would understand.

Well were just talking about germination.  If you were having a 70% or less germination rate, then ya, lets look at what's going on.  But this isn't going to effect your yield/quality.

I get a 100% rate myself

the soma guy says when you damage the fine water roots you stunt the plant

the other guy is in the same boat as me and is thinking like me

when a fella gives $10-15 a seed they better all pop

its up to the grower to make sure they get the best start they can and be the best plant that they can be

he is just looking for the best method as am i

Dude, you really need to start using full sentences.

It doesn't stunt them.  I've been doing this fore over a decade.  Tried all the methods of germination.  Wet paper towel is the best.

Aye, I guess if you throw them in the soil just after the tap root starts to peek out instead of waiting till you get a half inch root a fella should be OK??

I also read a little something about soaking your seed in a little kelp water??

I'll tell yall something I've noticed and that there is a certain smell in your bag/container when you open it when the seeds have popped. I mean I can tell they've popped before I even lift the towel.
Dunno?? Maybe I've lost my damn mind.

Well you don't want to get a half inch of root before you transplant.  You are just asking for trouble that way.  As soon as they crack you should be planting them.

And giving them any type of supplements before they are in soil and rooting and photosynthesizing is a waste of time and resources.

This is my thinking. Soak them in water til they crack. As soon as they do, place them right in jiffy pot/seed start soil, and keep warm and humid. Once you have what I like to think of as a little green satellite dish (catches rays from electromagnetic spectrum) with just the tip of roots showing at the edge of the jiffy pot, you can transplant into your penultimate container.

I hear there's reason to be paranoid about touching the tap root; only reason I think I'll avoid the paper towel this time.

Hawk is prolly right though, PT is a solid choice.
