germination- questions.
    #610731 - 02/27/12 10:46 AM (4 years, 9 months ago)

Hi yall-
this is my 3rd or 4th time growing, but first time in over 8 years.  I received some seeds from a friend of mine to germinate.  It was my knowledge that these seeds were probably years old.....did the whole germination routine that has worked for me countless times in the past.  (put seeds in moist paper towel, in between to plates and in a cool dark place.)
it has been 8 days, almost 9 and the only progress made is a little white fuzz on 3 of the 7 seeds in the paper.  from what I can remember it never took over 6 days, and when it did germinate it was without this white fuzz that I have now...

sorry if this makes no sense, any help would be much appreciated

-bmac

The temperature is your problem. Seeds like it warm for quick germination. The white stuff is mold, you're going to have to see if you can gently wipe that off and then try again.

I figured that was the one variable I didn't consider enough.  I just figured being in a warm climate almost year round it would have been ok.  You think gently wiping the mold off, and putting them in a cup of water for 24/48 will do it?

Nah, keep them in the paper towel method so they're not completely soaking. Just keep the temps up and you should be fine.

I'm gonna jump in here too...it will help (although at this point you're too far in to do it) with old seed germination rates if you "scuff" them prior to applying your moisture (for me, that's just soaking them for 12 hours in a shot glass and then sticking them in the soil BEFORE the root appears).
To scuff, just use some fine grit sandpaper and give 'em a light rub down...this creates micro abrasions on the hull surface and allows more surface area to be exposed to water.

Thanks 81.  Ive never heard of doing that, but I will start a new batch of seeds and do just that.  I also ordered feminized kush#1 from attitude.  so if all else fails, im sure those will germinate no problem.
As of right now, I have 2 seeds in dirt, after soaking in a papertowel for 2 days.  still have the 4 remaining in the paper towel. (coming up on 10 days)  also have 3 in a cup of water, coming up on 36 hrs at 5pm EST.
and those are all seeds that are likely to be 8-9 years old.

Line a matchbox with sandpaper drop the seeds in and shake for 20 to 30 seconds. Works great for scuffing the seeds.

I am fresh out of old seeds.  I had 9, 4 are still in the paper towel, and 5 are now in soil without actually producing a root or cracking.  3 of the 5 that are in soil spent only 36 hrs in a cup of water.  we will see how that method works....
like I said before, I have some being sent from attitude, so I'm assuming those will be a piece of cake compared to this...

fingers crossed of course

Thanks Magash, I was going to talk about that method, but I was too lazy to explain it.

So...its been almost 11 full days of the germination frustration.  I thought it was the temperature, and still even at 78-80 degree temps 24 hrs a day, still no seed germination.  safe to say they are dead seeds??
