Anyone know about subwoofers?

So I salvaged a single 10 inch subwoofer from my totaled car and was wondering what kind of amp I should get. I know nothing about car audio so any help is greatly appreciated.
Here are the specs.
Quote:
10" subwoofer with dual 4-ohm voice coils injection-molded polypropylene cone ribbed Santoprene rubber surround suitable for marine use power handling: 50-400 watts RMS (200 watts per coil) 800 watts peak power handling frequency response: 25-500 Hz sensitivity: 85.5 dB top-mount depth: 5-9/16" sealed box volume: 0.8-3.0 cu. ft. ported box volume: 1.25-1.75 cu. ft.

amps usually go .... the bigger the better.
but if ur gonna put a bigger one in, make sure you get a capacitor. That or you will through alternators pretty quick.
I got 3 big amps in my garage. No one here wants to buy em (2 are big and sick too)

The first thing you need to ask yourself is if you want to power just the sub or the sub + speakers with the amp

Yeah without the capacitor you will have headlight dimming issues as well with a bigger amp.
Been a few years since I had some major wattage in my ride.

if you get a large amp, ya, you def need a capacitor. the headlights will dim like an above poster said. also, if you listen to music with the engine OFF and the amp ON, you'll run that battery down until it dies in a matter of a few minutes.
a 10" sub doesnt need TOO much power. but i guess that depends on how hard you want it to hit.

You might as well power the speakers through the amp too. No sense in just having the sub hooked up it'll overpower your speakers.
I have a nice deck and speakers, I wanna do it up and put an amp/sub in my car but fuck me I'm not good with wiring shit.

Its not as hard as you might think. I just did my car with deck/speakers/amp/sub with no prior knowledge at all and just a little help from some friends.

Oh fuck, putting my deck in was brutal. Subarus don't come apart easy. Plus I dun goofed and cut the harness off so I had to re-solder it back on while holding the deck semi-out.
I guess you will probably have to take it out again to run a line to the amp. Thats why I ran all my lines all at once, even though my sub or rear speakers are not in yet all the lines are.

You would get a separate amp if you wanted to amplify the speakers. Get a 400 watt amp for your 400 watt RMS sub and adjust the settings on the amp so it's not pushing max. Don't get an amp for your speakers unless you have good speakers, like top notch component speakers. The 22-25 watts the (aftermarket) receiver puts out to each speaker is sufficient with a single 10". Turn your highs all the way up, your mids low and your bass at 0. Tweak your bass through your sub.

Why not just get a 1000 watt amp and power the sub and speakers for it in one swoop? Having a separate amp seems like a pain in the ass.
I ask not to be a smart ass but because that was my plan if and when I decide to do it.

I'm no expert on this, but have been advised by one, apparently you need to be careful when it comes to wattage. Not every amp that says its x watts is actually x watts. My 400w JBL is true 400w, and is all you need in a car, thing pumps!

Because you need to be able to tweak the frequencies for each system. You need your sub amp cutting out the high frequencies and your speaker amp cutting out the low frequencies. You can add capacitors but then you still won't have real control. Unless you have multiple RCA outputs on your deck, your receiver is going to consider your RCA outputs to be a sub, therefore allowing you to control the subwoofer through the deck. If you were branching off from that amp to your speakers, their volume would would go up when you turned your sub up and distort.

Unless you have badass speakers, you don't need to amplify them and even if you did decide to amplify your speakers, I doubt they can take over 35 watts, because I really doubt you have some Alpines, Infinitys or MB Quart speakers that can handle real wattage. If you branched off from a 1000 watt RMS amp, your speakers would probably disintegrate.

Don't do that. It will sound like garbage and more than likely all of your speakers will blow.
You don't need an amp for your speakers, especially if they're stock.
how complicated is this?
You have one DVC 4 ohm sub.
There are two ways to wire this...
http://www.kicker.com/dvc_wiring
One way will give you 2 ohms and the other will give 8 ohms. Go with the 2 ohms.
So a 2 ohm, 800 watt peak(400 rms), mono amplifier will be the best choice for you.
Anything around that will work.
A lot of brands don't run true to what they say though, so research what you look at before you buy it.
Since you're not going with a top of the line setup check out SSL amps on ebay, they're way over rated, but they're cheap, reliable, and sound pretty good.

Well I finally got it hooked up. My coworker did it for me in exchange for some bud. He also sold me his 1200 watt old school rockford fosgate amp for cheap. Also had to go out and get a capacitor kit. Shit fucking bumps for being a 10.
