light question
    #703321 - 12/30/13 02:49 PM (10 years, 2 months ago)

I am just getting started collecting everything for my first small grow and I am needing help. The space will be small and enclosed maybe around 3'x 3' x 4-5' tall.  Growing in soil and will have he proper venting and air flow through the space.  My question is on the proper choice of lighting.  I'm in this for the long haul and will purchase what is best suited for my space.  Seems that this subject is highly debated The biggest thing I'm afraid of is overheating in the small space.  I was told to go with HPS or MH lighting and I will if it will work in the space with no overheating issues.  Any help is much appreciated the one book I have doesn't go in to it and maybe the next one will thanks to all and have a HAPPY NEW YEAR........

normaly u want to try to get 50wats of light per a sq foot.. so for a 3x3 wich is 9sq feet 9x50=450  so i would go no less then 400watt light and go no higher then a 600watt.

Thanks for the quick reply.  What type of lighting do you suggest for the space with the correct spectrum.  Thanks man

Well most people will go with MH for their veg, and HPS for their flowering.  You can get away with HPS the whole way through though.

Make sure you get an enclosed and vented reflector.  Also you will need to consider your ventilation as well.

as hawk said you can use either use mh for veg and hps for veg and flower...  i use mh for veg and hps for flower... i woudl recomend that you get a ballast that can use both hps and mh so that you can try out both ways to see wich one you prefer.

Thanks man that will help.  One question about the vented reflector.  Should I wait until I purchase the light or do you know if the light and reflector will fit in a 3'sq area.  My grow box will be around 3'x3'x4-5' I plan to put the ballast outside of the box to allow for cooling. Thanks man and Happy New Year.

There are many different types and sizes reflectors.  When you go to buy the ballast, look at the different reflectors they have.  Or just start looking them up online.

I see now about the vented reflector.  So if I had fresh air introduced to the sealed cabinet at the bottom, and a piece of flex duct coming off the reflector hood that is connected to a fitting at the top of the cabinet to exhaust to the outside or to a carbon filter.  Does that sound about right.  Let me ask u this about CFM.  In an enclosed space the use of fans are there just for fresh air exchange and to help cool the plants from the heat generated from the lights right.  Thanks a lot for all the help.  Oh and on your suggestion I am looking to buy a reflector hood and MH and HPS bulbs with the corresponding ballast, but will both bulbs fit into the hood I choose to purchase.

For the most part yes, but if you intend on using a carbon filter it's better to pull air through them rather than push it through. A small 4" x 12" filter would work just fine for ya.

Yes. You're still gonna want a small oscillating fan blowing on your plants though.

and the bulbs will fit in your reflector. You just have to purchase a ballast that can run mh/hps.

I'd recommend a galaxy ballast.
