ManEater in FFOF under 1.4kW from Seed to Mother
    #683676 - 08/28/13 06:47 PM (10 years, 7 months ago)

  • Strain: ManEater, from regular seed

  • Fox Farm Ocean Forest soil, unadulterated
  • Grow Big, Big Bloom, and Tiger Bloom nutrient trio
  • Well water approx 7 pH and saturated with calcium sulfate (gypsum), sometimes R/O water from same source

  • Veg space: 7' x 2' x 6' closet
  • Flower space: 7.25' x 3.25' x 6' (7' height if I move the ballasts)

  • Veg lighting: (18/6) 400W MH and two 100W - 4 bulb 2 foot T5 fluoros
  • Flower lighting: (12/12) two magnetic 400W HPS and one 600W digital HPS = approx 59.4164456 W/ft^2

  • Veg ventilation: 6" can fan and a small recirculating fan
  • Flower ventilation: 6" inline fan and 4" squirrel-cage blower, both ~465cfm, and a 16" recirculating fan

  • Cloner: 24 site DWC, root hormone, dead plant matter enzyme, H2O2 initially, steady 80F, 2 X 23w cfl (18/6)

Progress

Seeds started via wet paper towel in ziplock bag: 20

Seeds germinated within days: 19
    seedlings planted into recycled FFOF

Day 1 - Nineteen healthy seedlings, a bit stretched from lack of light at first, under two (2-foot, 4-bulb, 96w VHO T5)s

Day 30 - Plants labelled and spread out, some now (far) under a 400W MH
One plant growing weaker (less nodes, skinny leaves, light color) moved to flower in same pot
18 plants remain, on approx 9th node remain in original, tiny containers

Day 34 - All plants moved under MH, tallest about a foot and just starting to alternate nodes, a few burn spots from the taller plants growing into the T5 fluoro

Day 40 - Roughly half or more showing preflowers, but too early for me to be sure of sex.  waiting for the rest to catch up, then transplanting the females and cloning

Day 44 - Transplanted the plants that are or appear to be female, some not yet showing.  unknowns, potential males, and one potential female in a slightly larger pot not transplanted yet.  Rootbinding had started to appear on some plants, approx 18" tall in one pint containers.  transplanted to 0.75-1.0 gallon sized pots, fresh FFOF soil.

Day 53 - All but one of the 18 remaining plants showing clear preflowers, looks like 12 females and 6 males, plus one tiny female in flowering room, total out of 20 seeds = 13 females + 6 males + 1 ungerminated seed.  not bad.

Day 65 - Cloned all 13 females, top half of each plant, one node underwater

Day 79 - Clone from ME 3 planted, roots a day or two behind on all others

Notes

They were overwatered for the first two weeks, so I let them dry out for a few days then gave them 1/2 strength fox farm Grow, which perked them up.  I then alternated RO water and 1/2 to 3/4 strength Grow solution.  this seemed to burn them a little bit, but I'm trying to compensate for the fact that they should have been transplanted by now, but I just don't have the room to do so (yet).

In the past few days I've seen what Hawk (the hawk's eye?) was saying about his being 6' tall before showing sex; in the past few days these plants have stretched like nothing I've seen before.  Would going to 24hr light from 18 or 20hrs light help at all with the stretch?  No big deal either way, I now plan on taking one clone from each asap and flowering to eliminate the males as quickly as possible then transplant all the females.

new grow setup so the whole thing is definitely a work in progress, let me know if there's anything I can improve :awesome:

Also, since around day 70 all water has been reverse osmosis (slowly out of a sink!).

the hawks eye

lookin good though man. Nice to see someone else throwin up a man eater grow. Mine is still months away.

I can't see how adjusting the light hours in veg would affect stretch. The distance between the light and your plants will affect how the plants stretch.

I've heard of growers opting for longer light cycles during vegetation to reduce stretch. I think the logic comes from the stretches that occur during the first few weeks of flowering (which I guess happens, because during the dark cycle, the plants are still seeking out light.) So I guess by implication, more light hours during vegetation might mean shorter distance between nodes. I might be wrong, but that's my understanding.

That was my reasoning.  But so far the plants have remained within a manageable height due to the root restriction.  I was going to top the plants but I don't think that'll be necessary now.  A few more pics to update, and today (day 34) I observed the first alternation of nodes and possible pre-flowers, but they were too small to see clearly.  I'll check with the microscope in a few days; I'd really like to sex these and cull the males before I have to transplant.  I checked the tallest/biggest (#18) plant's rootball and it surprisingly did not look rootbound at all, just nicely filled with roots (it's in FFOF 2nd use soil).

Cloning in a few days... just getting over a bottleneck in the veg-flower cycle.  veg room is packed.

water carefully
