Coming along pretty good there.

:seriousthumbsup:

Would you say the chiller has proven itself as an asset?

Absolutely.

So my major benefit here is that my water can hold more oxygen - the colder water is the more dissolved oxygen it holds.
Another benefit is that the plants can tolerate higher temperatures in canopy. What it is also happening is it's contributing to heat exchange in the closet - having 100litres (26gal) at 10c lower than room temperature sitting under the plants is obviously absorbing heat since the chiller kicks on very frequently. So as I've found out over the last few days, the area around my closet is now the coolest area of my room. I have no need for an AC even on hot days now.

My question was what was the ideal temp. Most temperature ranges I found were very wide, which according to one thread, just doesn't make a lot of sense from a plant health perspective.

I did some research on root/water temperatures.
Quote:

60-75f (15c-23c) for normal plants
75-80f for seedlings and clones
Passive heat exchange with cooler solution - plants can take more heat if roots are cooler
Anything over 70 encourages algae
http://www.420magazine.com/forums/hydroponic-gardening/73345-water-temperature.html

68f-75f (20-23C) for normal plants
Anything bellow 20 begins to restrict uptake of water and nutrients
http://www.dampkring.nl/12592/cannabis-growing-guide-water.html

72f/22C is the sweet spot.
Bellow this and plant growth slows
The cooler the water, the more dissolved oxygen it can hold.
Plant water should be cooler in hotter air climates.
http://www.cannabisculture.com/articles/4250.html

No lower than 64f (17c) and no higher than 75f (23c).
According to this thread, "Mel Thomas Cannabis cultivation complete grower's guide" says at 75 degree the plant will up "take all the nutrients in the mix."
10 degrees is a very wide range for plant temperatures - most plants die within 3-4 degree changes according to this thread.
https://www.greenpassion.org/index.php?/topic/11222-water-temperature/

A majority of all sources, some not listed here, all described ranges within 68-75f with 72f as a likely sweet spot.

I've chosen to keep my water at around19.5-20.5c 65-68f because by the time the water goes through the pump and irrigation it's gotten a little warmer already.

8th of September-- WEEK 6 FLOWERING
Flowering Phase (39)
Sour Diesel & Crimea Blue (87) Pineapple Chunk (74)
Light 12/ 12 Dark

PH 5.5
EC 2.5
Temp 25C
HR 55%

On the 6th I flushed the system for 24 hours with clean ph'd water. Cleaned it too before I filled it -except there wasn't much to clean. I attribute this completely to the overkill water treatment system I have.

I let the plants get too big, probably because of my carelessness that came with deciding this was not going to be a serious grow. Then again if this isn't meant to be a serious grow, it begs the question of why I'm pouring in expensive fertilizers... Well at this point, it's to make the most of what I have.

On the 7th, 24 hours after I filled the tank with clean water, I refilled it with 92litres of clean water. I ph'd it to about 5.5 and added 368ml of grow, micro, bloom (368x3 = 1104ml) then added 184ml of Bud Candy and 184ml of Overdrive. Brought the EC to 2.5.

So the plants are not looking the best - a lot of the tops have signs of heat stress. It was quite cool today and the closet stayed around 25C - it's supposed to get cooler this week. This brings back memories of that Berlin Summer nightmare back in '10. Albeit, in this grow only the tops are affected by high heat. The light in the area right under the bulb is very intense.

So I hope the next 3-4 weeks will cool down some more so these guys get a chance to fatten up a little bit. In any case as I said the buds are not looking all the great.
